Hawaii Primes need gas treatment??

Can't find a reason that Toyota requires fuel treatment every 5,000 miles only for Prime owners in Hawaii. All, or nearly all gas stations in Hawaii have E10 gas.

Any ideas?

Just called Maui (where my son lives) Toyota. Guy in sales says they have the potion, $29 for 6oz! Maybe it's snake oil.
He says he doesn't sell it too often because most people don't use it like they should. Gave no reason why it's needed.

it is to keep fuel injectors cleaner

HI gasoline regs means you get pump gas with less additives. additives which
the engines are designed around and expected to be used. so the Toyota EFI additive is essentially same as Techron or BG44k
  • Pour-in product.
  • Concentrated deposit control additives formulated to be diluted into the fuel tank and remove deposits from fuel injectors and intake valves.
  • Restores optimum fuel injector spray pattern to result in cleaner and more complete fuel combustion.
  • Can correct problems including hard starting and rough idling due to injector and intake valve deposits.
  • Results include improved performance and fuel economy and reduced emissions.
  • 12 x 6.4 bottles per case.

Sounds like it's been around a few years for Toyota cars in HI.

"Because Hawaii and Puerto Rico do not require ethanol in their gas, Toyota now offers this EFI Tank Additive. It contains Active ingredients such as surface activator (breaks the surface tension between non-miscible liquids), fatty alcohol, petro naphtha, synthetic oil and organic amine).
If these were the real reasons, to keep the fuel injectors/tank etc. cleaner, why wouldn't it apply to all Toyotas, not just Primes?
Sounds to me like it's to solve an issue that went away years ago.

Toyota is a member of, and supports the Top Tier Gas Consortium - http://www.toptiergas.co

This EFI Tank Additive mimics Toyota's attempt to make a non-top-tier gas act like Top Tier Gas."m/Gas."

That doesn't make sense since there is no more a lesser quality gas in Hawaii than in the lower 48 states. But Toyota only requires gas treatment for Primes in Hawaii.

Oh well, I guess we'll never know.

Interesting they don't specify how much to add. Is it their 6-ounce bottle?

If it is 5000 mi of engine drive, just calc your mpg over 5k engine run miles and add it with that amount of gasoline used?
Maybe there is something equivalent available in larger bottles than 6 oz to use that is less expensive?

Air is quite a bit cheaper. I suspect that's what most Hawaiians use.

Hawaiian, here :). Confirmed with dealer that yes, it is required per manufacturer specifications (it's in the owners manual). Our fuels are e10 but we also have e0 mid-grade gasoline at select stations. Most, if not all, stations dispense Top Tier fuel.

It's really up to you if you wanna run the cleaner. I do. With D4S and all the other technology in this car, the last thing I need is to fight the dealership about a warranty claim because I didn't use injector cleaner per the manufacturer. Unlikely, but possible.

That's more likely in big cities like NYC where there are a lot of low mileage cars because they don't have to drive far for most services. The low mileage is deceiving because many such trips don't get the engine to operating temperature which is much more harmful that longer fully warmed up driving.

My son lives on Maui (and drives Nissans). Even tho the shortest distance to work is only 3 miles that's across Oprah's ranch so he has to drive almost 40 miles to get there and the island is only 80 miles long.

I came here cuz My 2023 ICE RAV4 XLE's docs want "Toyota EFI tank additive"(*) in "Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and American Samoa only". So not just Primes, not just Hawaii, and still makes no sense. Downeast Maine is nearly as far from the gasoline brewers as Hawaii yet I get no hint of "bad gas" (on the highway) like we used to.

(*) (sic) Must be a surcharge on capital letters. EFI should be capitalized, and you'd think not capitalizing Toyota would be a corporate sin. And the product name might be capitalized? Sure:
