My 08 RAV 4 was crushed up the rear by a landcruiser ute. I have just received my replacement door. And instead of waiting for a man to do was hoping for a bit of help to attempt myself. Just wanted a bit of insight into how to get the whole door off to be able to put a new one one.

That's a pretty good hit. Are you sure nothing else is damaged besides the door?

I hope you or the other driver have auto insurance, if so let the auto insurance companies handle it. It may inspire them to process the claim fast if you start complaining about possibly being hurt.
As was stated, there may be a lot more damage than just the door.

I also prefer to let the insurance handle it. if you are going to do it, yourself
remove the inside panels and remove all the wire connections.

Does your door come with the wiper motor and wiper installed? How about brake lights and spoiler? Glass?
Is the "door open" sensor at the door jamb still working or is it damaged?

Apart from that, the sheet metal might have been distorted so that the new door will not align correctly, but you would know this only after your install the new door.

Please take lots of pictures and document all your installation steps. It will be useful in case you decide to involve the insurance down the road.

Ok. So this accident happened October last year. The P PLATER driver was at fault and insured but wormed his way out of having to pay. My partner was driving, I wasn't in the car. Wasn't impressed. So now JULY 2015. I've had to wait til now to get tax cheque so able to pay for a secondhand door.

Anyway, I'm pretty patient and with a bit of cursing and kicking the door, it finally came out. First time it's been opened since the accident.

So I have the new door on but **** thing doesn't sit straight. I have thought about slotting out hinges so I can sit it straighter. Partner doesn't want to help me!!!! Typical!!!! About to pull my hair out. Don't have $7000+ to fix it that they quoted me.

Damn wish I had insurance!!!

It's possible that when the spare tire was pushed into the door...the door then pulled on the 2 outer connecting points causing the left and right sides to slightly pull in......if that is the case you only have 2 options.....have a body shop fix it or get a Jack and use it to push the 2 sides apart so the door fits......I would find another rav and take measurements to see if that is the case......I would also toss that worthless partner out on their ass.......

If the other driver had insurance it's time to get an attorney and get the other driver and his insurance company to pay for what apparently is major damage to your vehicle. I don't understand how the other driver can "worm his way out" of liability that was obviously his fault. He hit you, you didn't back into him!

Not sure what you mean by " P PLATER driver was at fault and insured but wormed his way out of having to pay." Sounds like you didn't put in a claim to his insurance company?
Like I thought in my previous post, it appears you have much more damage than just a dent in the door. Unless you're skilled in autobody repair, I'd leave this to a pro. Sorry.:serious

A P PLATER is a typically younger driver with a probationary license--think learner's permit. They are required to have a P plate showing their status until a certain age.

There is obviously a lot more damage than just the door. There is no way it is just going to "bolt up" and be functional. Sorry for your dilemma. How someone hitting you from the rear got out of paying for the damage is well beyond me. Where I live if you hit someone in the rear you are guilty.........period.

I don't think you're teaching the P PLATER a very good lesson if you let them "worm out of it." Their liability insurance should pay to make this right.

If you insist on taking on the burden yourself, find a body shop and get them to spread the door frame just to make it fit. Shop around a few places for quotes. Forego some of the niceties like paint scratches for now, just get it operational, it might not cost so much.
