Help! Tint Vs. Safety Glass

I just bought a 2023 Rav 4 limited. The dealership has dealer add ons, which included tinted windows. When I picked up the car they had only tinted the driver and passenger side windows, but no other windows. Now they are telling me that the windows come "tinted" from Toyota. I believe they only come with safety glass. One, I do not believe these are the same things. I am trying to find out more info on safety glass because I was always told that was not something that keeps the heat and UV rays out of the car. Can someone tell me what they know about this? The windows are not much darker than the 25% on the two front windows which is the darkest Texas allows. Thanks for any insights.

Safety glass is a term used to describe either the laminated windshield glass or the tempered glass in all the other windows. Tempered glass is treated to have a skin that is in compression which makes it extremely strong and will break into millions of small pieces that are less likely to cut you. Some OEM windows mostly on luxury cars are also treat to limit the ultraviolet component of sunlight to limit interior damage and also protects people's skin. It is usually labeled on the glass.
However there is tinted safety glass which is used on the Rav4. Not sure of the UV rating of that glass.

All glass on all cars is safety glass. Windshield is laminated, side and back hatch windows are safety glass.

The Limited RAV4 comes from the factory with tinted side windows, but the back seat windows are tinted darker than the front seat side windows; that is why the dealer only tinted the front seat side windows. But the factory tint is embedded in the glass, not a film on the outside of the glass as is installed afterwards. The film can bubble or peel off unless it is installed professionally. The film tint is also damaged by window cleaners that has ammonia in it.

I believe the windshield has a slight tint to it. In may states, including mine, it is illegal to tint the windshield darker than what came from the factory. When our state had safety inspections, one of the required tests was for the level of tint on the windows; I remember my windshields were usually in the 90% range, while the side and rear windows were as low as 40-50% for the factory glass.

Is that really tint on the back windows as it comes from the factory? Toyota says on website it comes with safety glass. Usually that is more for peepers looking into the car(though it’s so light that you can easily see into the car), but not for heat and UV protection. I’m in Texas and I need hear/UV protection.
The dealer also said they provided “window tinting” as part of their care package that they made me pay extra for,

one of the cool things in some states you can get a prescription for darker window tint.
here in Iowa you can get one.

for rear side glass we used back in the 1980's two layers of limo tint.
for a mostly black out.

these days they make tint film in almost any range and color you can think of.
just make sure it passes the states laws you drive in.

i just use 3 to 4 dark shade safety glasses when in super bright sun.
they wrap around well for good side coverage and good field of view.

The UV rays are blocked by the glass, tinted or not. That's the reason why photochromic eyeglass lenses (transitions) don't get dark or stay dark inside a car. The tinting is more for comfort and privacy, since it blocks the visible part of the light spectrum, making it easy on the eyes and making it harder for outsiders to peep in.

Heat blocking is a different issue. Infrared (IR) radiation is what causes the heat we feel. Some glasses may have IR protection built in. There are also some tint films that provide IR blocking. I had my front windows tinted with a super-ceramic film, which is supposed to block up to 92% of IR radiation.

I believe this is Toyota document maybe similar to what you are looking for:

As others have already pointed out the OEM rear tempered (safety) glasses come in darker color.

In most cases, the term "tinted" used by the dealers are matters of semantics to describe the darker color of glasses, and unless specified in writing, may not be referring to the actual tinting of the glasses with aftermarket films.

IMO, there was clearly a lack of common or meeting of two minds in your case. Dealer assumed you understand their explanation of tinting add-on is for front windows only as the rear windows are already "tinted" vs. you assuming the tinting add-on is for 4 windows.

Not sure how much the dealer charged you for the front windows tinting. just for comparison:
I paid a local shop $450 to install 3M Ceramic IR films on all windows (inc. windshield visor) on our RX, and RAV4 will cost $500 due to 2 extra small side windows.

We have the Toyota factory tint on both our 2019 and 2020 XSEs. Wife and i both know that Texas summers are hot. We tried the usual folding aluminum windshield shade screens. We got the same results we have had for decades. The sun shine through the windshield. The shade blocks the sunlight but absorbs the IR heat. This is like shutting the barn door after the horse got out. Car is still hot inside and you get to wrestle with the hot shade trying to fold it up.

I read about have IR filter film applied to the windshield. We went and had the Xpel Film for IR/UV blocking applied to the inside of our windshields. This made all the difference in the world. We were blocking the IR and UV light from entering the cabin. Temps were much better. There are many like products on the market. I don't sell any of theme just used that one cause it had good ratings three years ago.

Textoy, in looking at the Toyota site for the LE, it says “Privacy glass on all rear side, quarter and liftgate windows” is included in the price. https://www.toyota.com/rav4/2023/features/mpg/4430

So your glass with no dealer add-ones would have had darkened privacy glass for rear passengers and cargo window.

I have the same on my car and yes, it does not filter out UV rays. It’s privacy (darkened) glass only. While researching my car purchase, I read that somewhere on the Toyota site.
