Hello all,

I'm having issues with people hearing me when making phone calls with the USB apple carplay feature. I would say that the mic works only about 20% of the time. But the rest of the time people on the other end can't hear anything at all. I can always hear the other person just fine. Oddly, the Siri carplay feature always seems to work which is interesting because it uses the microphone too. Other apps that use the car mic also seem to work consistently.

I've tried rebooting my phone and updating to latest iOS neither has worked. I also very recently received an Entune software update but unfortunately that didn't fix the issue either. It also doesn't make any different if I use Siri voice commands to make the call or if I use the touchscreen to manually make the call. It also doesn't seem to matter if it is an incoming or an outgoing call.

Has anyone experienced this and/or know of a solution?

Thank you.
I am having the same issue as you are and have since the beginning. I have a 2019 RAV4 Hybrid XSE and an iPhone 11 Pro, previously an iPhone XS. I have had the issue with both model iPhones, and any other iPhone that has ever been connected to my car. The only way I have been able to fix the issue during a call is to quickly hit the speakerphone button ON my iPhone itself, and then click it again to return to CarPlay. It’s incredibly frustrating... anyone found a permanent solution yet?

Hey! I’m having the exact same issue. Siri can’t hear me when I try to make a call. If I receive a call, I can hear the other person but they can’t hear me. I don’t know how to fix it. It worked 9 months out of the year I had my 2019 rav4. Been to the dealer and they can’t fix it.

I had the same problem. The dealer had to disconnect the battery to reset the system. They also downloaded the current version of software for the vehicle . It solved the hands free problem and now I can get vehicle info from my Toyota app such as tire pressure, etc. That did not work until this was done

Hello, I have been experiencing same problem with my Rav4 2019 as well, for approximately last 6 months or so. I understand few folks have had luck when dealers did a reset of the system and it started working again. I am planning to take my car to the dealership for a quick check on this problem and will request them to perform similar procedure. Do you know if I am expected to pay for the service? Or, would this be covered under some sort of warranty (Car was picked up January 2019)?

Did it work? Curious to whether it solved the problem. My dealer said there isn’t a software update available.
Yes, it worked. I mean - the service manager confirmed he tested with his own phone. I just, so far, made one call and made sure it was working.
It took slightly more than 2 hours (I am not sure if they were working on it entirely). At one point, they came back to me and mentioned that - they would like to disconnect the battery and leave the car for 30 minutes before applying the update and giving it another shot. That sounded like they have been trying quite a few different ways to update the software and make it work. Finally, after the disconnected the battery, waited and then tried - it seems to have worked.

I asked 3 different friends with iphones to try their phone in my car. All 3 phones had the identical issue to mine. That is, two-way communication would work exactly 1 time for making calls, but then after that the person receiving the call could not hear the caller. As stated previously the problem was resolved by turning the car off and then on again. Then it would work again 1 time.

Is there anyone reading this that is using USB wired carplay to make calls and had it work properly more than once after vehicle power on?
Hi JW, I may have figured it out... but a caveat that my problem was oddly the exact opposite: my first call after powering on the car or connecting the USB Lightning cable failed to connect the RAV4 microphone (although others can hear me). And... having just bought the car 3 weeks ago, it worked fine the first 10 days, then started this behavior. A temp fix was to tap "speakerphone" on my iPhone XS immediately after placing a call, and then tap it off again and proceed with talking to the other person : RAV4 microphone would now work, and generally (!) stayed working for subsequent calls... until the next time I shut off the car ! :~( ??? (And guess how many times I forgot to do that until they said "Hello ? Hello ?" 😂

But here's the better fix. I suspected the original "Do Not Enable / Enable Once / Always Enable" setting, and learned that it can be "reset" by plugging in the phone with Entune's "Apple Car Play" setting turned off (see this Toyota PDF - https://www.toyota.com/content/ebrochure/Toyota_CarPlay_Siri.pdf )

Anyway, with the RAV4 powered on and the iPhone NOT connected, I went to Entune's Menu>Setup>General and turned off CarPlay. I then shut off the car, plugged in my iPhone to the USB/Lightning cable, and restarted the RAV4. Predictably, the "Enable" question came up and I selected "Always Enable" (as I did when I first got the car, by the way !). Presto ! Now when I restart the car / plug in my phone it works as it did originally: RAV4 microphone is activated !

It seems that perhaps the Enable setting gets corrupted / confused; perhaps it happened when I plugged in my girlfriend's iPhone some time back ? Anyway, please let me know if this worked for you as it did for me (y)(n) ?

Thank you.
Disconnect negative battery cable to reset system.

Somms, you are really fast! You act like a customer service of the dreams :D
Well, no luck yet, this is a picture of my AVN:

Sadly, not of the buttons mentioned in the PDF is present in this model :(
So, I'm waiting to get some new ideas! Keep the thread posted of any advance!

Thanks!

so here it is, June of 2021, and I still have this problem on my brand new iPhone 12 Pro, as with every phone before it. I have had a few over the air "OTA" updates to the head unit in my 2019 rav4 and this microphone system persists!!!
Toyota Dealer says it's my phone, yet Apple tech supports says its the cars radio system.
both are pointing the fingers at each other.
I have tried the suggestions listed above with no resolve.

Why can't Toyota just admit the problem and issue a simple firmware update to fix this, I can only assume the problem is beyond software and must be hardware?

I’ve had this issue since I’ve had my vehicle (2019 RAV4 hybrid). The person on the other end of my call is able to hear me on about 20% of calls. I can make successive calls within minutes of each other and one may be okay and the other is like I am on mute. I haven’t been able to figure it out. I even called Apple and they had no clue. Any help would be appreciated

I would make sure that your radio has the latest software. Some of the updates corrects microphone issues.

You'll need you VIN so they will show you proper software updates for your specific vehicle build. You'll also need a USB flash drive formatted as a FAT32 so the RAV4 can recognize it when plugged in.

Her is the link to the updates:

I had a few issues with my 2019 but since I now have the latest software for about 6 to 8 months now, {knock on wood} I haven't had any issues. One of these was a mike issue but it was only on one call which unplugging the iPhone and plugging it back in. I haven't had to do that since.

Thanks. Very helpful. I’ll try that.
