I have a 2019 XLE Premium with 74K miles. This morning on my way to work mud & sand mode engaged itself. I searched and only found one mention and no one else commented on that post. Should I be worried? Should I run to the dealer ASAP? Should I ignore? Un-mechanical girl brain but my first reaction is fear/panic when a vehicle computer makes its own decisions.

Thanks!

It means you should that the dirt road shortcut to work?
Hey, I have no clue but, Welcome!
And I did notice that's a lot of miles on a two year-old car. Maybe there is a shortcut you should be taking!

Probably nothing to worry about unless it happens again. I know I've accidentally turned off my brake hold on drives with my phone's USB cable sticking out the bottom when laying the phone down in the tray.

It could also be the beginning of the machines rising up to overthrow their human masters too, so there is that to consider. 🤔

My Limited has a turn knob for this selection since it has a different AWD system so needed to refresh my memory by looking through the manual, I think I might have found a potential solution to your concern.

Do you routinely change from ECO to Normal; driving modes. If so, the Normal and Mud & Sand are one on top of the pother. Is it possible that instead of hitting the Normal button, you hit the Mud & Sand instead?

There is for sure differences. He is my take
snow mode - neuters the power and tries to prevent spining the tires
rock mode - stops the car from rolling backwards buy appying the brakes. I only tried it when putting car on ramps so far
mud and sand - lets the tires spin. fun mode
Eco - makes the gas peddle feel heavier
sport - higher shift points

Also when it’s getting stuck in mud and sand mode you’re using probably more gas And it’s turning your collision system off dangerous

I am having the same issue with my 2019 trail. Switches from eco to mud mode or normal to mud mode frequently. Happened while towing my boat in the rain at 110km/hr and I almost went in the ditch. Have been to the dealership twice and they can't find the problem. I had them open the consol switches and look for dirt or coffee residue, they found nothing and the problem persists.

Did you find out what the issue was?

I've had mine in several times and they can't find the problem. After I complained several times they replaced the sealant on the drivers side for one of the electrical panels. There is a service notice out for case where the automatic wipers engage when it's not raining, mine didn't have this problem but they thought it might be related. That remedied the problem for a few months. Issue happened again a few weeks ago. Called dealership and they told me to bring it directly to the shop the next time it happens. I've since driven around 5000km with no issues.

Hi I do have the same problem.
here the solution.
first press the eco mode , the mud mode will disappear.
second : turn off the traction control.
this is the button on the left side of driver seat heater. Make sure on the screen will show the traction controlis off
Third: turn off your car and turned it on after few second the mud and sand should not be lit. Good luck.

Having this same issue 2019 Adventure. Did you figure it out? My warranty is up in June so I’d like to resolve it before then. Thanks in advance for help.

If your warranty is up in June and you haven't had the dealership look into it yet, I would do that right away so it's on their books. This way you can have leverage if they either can't duplicate the issue or it returns after the warranty expires.

I have a 2019 Rav4 XLE with the same issue. The mud and sand mode engages when I put it in park and also periodically while I drive. Anyone know how to resolve this issue?

I don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but this occasionally happens on mine and appears to be related to the roof leak issues. I would check the upper A-pillars (columns between the windshield and the door windows) for any stains. If so, my suggestion is to garage the vehicle for a day and put a big fan under the driver’s foot well. This should dry out any moisture and you can check again if the problem occurs.

I took my car in and the dealership did repair the leaky roof rack. But the problem is that they don't want to admit the leaky roof rack caused the mud and sand issue. I called Toyota, and rather than call me, they called the dealership, and they said that the roof rack had nothing to do with an electrical issue.

Good luck with this issue and just hope your dealership is better than mine.
