Some manufacturers have changed the behaviour of the CVT in a way that it behaves like a stepped transmission.
They did this because some consumers didn't like the CVT behaving as it should so they made it less efficient by creating virtual steps.

3000-4000 rpm isn't extremely high for an atmospheric engine. So it is understandable that it "shifts" at those RPM ranges.

 

I've no idea what a variomatic or multidrive S gearbox is. In North America, the 2010 2.5l four cylinders came with a four-speed automatic transmission. The 3.5l V-6 came with a five-speed automatic.

 

The Multidrive S is a CVT transmission.
Variomatic was the original name of the first belt driven CVT transmission designed and produced by DAF in the Netherlands.

Some more info, the car is a 2.0L and I live in Sweden.
Than I assume that it is a CVT that make these steps by adjusting the discs in specific positions. And I can in manual mode choose the positions in steps 1 - 6.

It make sence.

 

Does it also use steps when you are in D?
With the CVT it is critically important that the transmission fluid is changed very regularly. If it is unknown when it was last changed I would change it as soon as reasonably possible.
Do check that you absolutely get the correct fluid for the CVT.
