My new rav4 has been dinged and scrached and now a rock chip on the way home from work.

I have a trip planned saturday and i am working all day friday so will be hard to get it repaired in one day, plus covid.....

You guys think i am ok with driving long distance with the chip or will it spread. Also thinking to take it to dealer over windshield place. Any advice would be most appreciated.

See if your insurance will cover Safelite. If your insurance wont cover it then contact and see the cost. They legitimately will come to you. I had them drive out to the boon docks to fill a chip in my windshield. So they should have no problem coming to your job

That is quite an annoying situation. With that sort of chip damage the windshield probably will survive taking a weekend trip, but those spider leg - like cracks ultimately will spread into cracks which will result in the need to replace it and probably affect the in-glass antenna. Suggest calling a mobile auto glass repair/replacement service where you are in Canada and have them either repair it if possible with acrylic resin (probably not possible) or replace it. Suggest also checking with your insurance - replacement will be expensive and depending upon its provisions you may or may not be out of pocket for a deducible amount.

Thanks for the help everyone. I contacted a few places but they all told me i need to come in and have them look at it. Problem i am at work and they close when i get out and no one working weekends. Think i will just go on my trip and what happens happens. To me looks like i might need replacement and my deductible is 1k😟. So no way i am getting out of this cheap....
Go to Canadian tire and buy 2 windshield repair kits , I just had a similar crack in my Highlander
and can’t hardly see it after the repair, mind you that the size I had was about a nickel, per kit around $ 16.-

Oh my I know this feeling all too well. Two weeks ago a rock came out of nowhere on the highway and chipped my windshield right in my line of vision too. It was about 0.25” line with a chip in the middle. I took it to safelite and now it’s like 0.75 because they had to dig in the chip and that made the crack a little bigger and now when the sun hits it, it glistens at me. I’m debating calling my insurance to see if they will replace the windshield since it does bother me especially when the sun hits it. It’s almost like the windshield is mocking me lol

I have noticed the rav4 windshield is considerably thinner than my 2014 highlander. Ive got a small rock chip less than a week after I pick up my new ride. You can hear the sound difference from the impact of small rocks. My highlander definitely got a thicker glass. Maybe with a modern vehicle, it is all about weight reduction and efficiency.

I've noticed the "light duty" thinness of my XLE windshield, too. It's about a durable as a potato chip as I've had a few small chips that I had to fix. Also, I'd hate to see what a dealer windshield replacements costs because this windshield isn't just a piece of glass. Mine has the wiper heating wires/elements in it, shaded texturing top and bottom, etc. Plus, that magic electronics box above and behind the rearview mirror has to be reinstalled and calibrated perfectly. I wouldn't trust someone like Safelight to do that in my driveway.

I’m not too impressed with the windshield on my 2021 LE. After a little over a month it got a chip that also had a hairline crack. I had safelite fill it but come on one month and already a chip with crack? The 2019 Camry I had never got chipped and cracked and plenty of rocks have hit the windshield.

I’m starting to wonder how many corners did Toyota cut on this car? I still love it but they went cheap from steel rims with covers but charge more yet a base LE Camry had alloy rims and cost less. The windshield is definitely low quality compared to the SE Camry I had and my 2015 bmw 428i.

all comes down to fuel economy, thinner glass means less weight, less weight means better fuel economy. But glass is glass, some big impact will leave a minor mark, some minor impact will crack the glass and if the chip is close to an edge of the glass, odds the crack will develop right across the windshield.
