Parking Brake = Emergency Brake?

Back in the day, parking brakes doubled as emergency brakes in case your brakes failed. Are these new electronic brakes able to do that...can you pull up on the switch & slow the car down using your parking brake?

I posted this video well over a year ago and the thread generated a bit of discussion. I would not advise trying to stop the RAV from a high speed with just the EPB. If the brakes fail shift into neutral then judiciously use the EPB. I do not know if you can also use the S-mode selective shift to downshift the RAV to slow it and then use the EPB--but it seems possible.

Interesting video. Thanks for reposting it. Hope we never have to use it.

what does that "hold" button do, I can't figure it out.
I don't use it myself. As I understand it if you have the brake hold active when you come to a stop at a red light you can take your foot off the brake pedal and the brakes will be engaged and the RAV won't move. Then when you step on the gas the brakes disengage and the RAV goes. Here's a decent video explaining the brake hold function. Apparently it has limitations. One of which is it only works for three minutes.

To do that I just pull up on the brake switch and it holds the car in Drive or Neutral. On my 2023 it doesn't seem to do anything.
It shows you in the video. It starts about 1:30 onward. Another great vid. NO you do not use the parking brake at all to use the hold.

just the EPB
Thanks. That looks better than how my 2002 Honda, hand-lever and cables, stopped on emergency brake. The first week I took it off-highway, pulled the lever up, and it slowed. Pulled the lever to the stop, and it slowed a little better. I resolved to avoid needing it (tho I did use it for parking).

I figured adjustment might help but the service manual tole me to rip out half the interior, no special tool. Ah, no.

The last month I owned the Honda I mentioned it to the kid mechanic. He pulled the center armrest bucket and dinked with a open-end. Wow! Now it "took" at half stroke. I didn't try an e-stop because I just wanted to get out of the poor car, but it might even have locked-up the rear tires. (Which is less than half of the Service brakes cuz the rear is light.)

Don't overthink the HOLD option. Its great if your in a drive thru or stopped traffic for more than a few mins. You have to depress your brake. Then press HOLD. You can now release the brakes and the car will keep the brakes on until you step on the gas OR the timeout which is like 5 mins ish? Obviously they dont want you to put car in HOLD and forget.
