Portable battery jump starter

Has anyone here bought a portable car battery jump starter for their RAV4, given the problems with batteries going dead? Amazon has some on sale for reasonable prices, $40-50 and up. I would hate to get stranded somewhere due to a dead battery. Even if you have Toyota roadside assistance, you might be waiting a while for help to arrive. I was traveling the past two weeks in remote areas, far from the nearest town or Toyota dealer, and would have been screwed if the battery had gone dead then.

Any recommendations on brands of chargers? The guy who came to jump my car had one the size of a book, and it boosted my car immediately. Seems like good insurance given the widespread occurrence of the problem and Toyota’s seemingly inability to resolve it in a timely manner.

I also think it’s a good thing to have. Whether you have a battery problem or not, for $50-100 you can have peace of mind. The chargers also can charge electronic items as well so they have multiple uses. I bought this one the other day. Haven’t used it yet

UPDATE: just under 900 miles and got a dead battery. Sitting in the garage for just over 24 hours! Nothing was left on and it is a hybrid LE so we don’t even have the smart key. Really glad I picked up the charger. It started right up, but only after I had the correct side of the red clamp on the positive terminal post inside the fuse box. Taking it to the dealer today to document the issue. Pain in the ass since the whole reason we wanted a new car is reliability.

The NOCO-GB40 was recommended by PartSource and was on sale at Canadian Tire, where I bought it from right after my 12v went dead on my 2020 XSE apparently as a result of the vehicle being driven only on short trips for the recent couple of months then being parked for a number of days. I doubt if I'll ever need the portable jumper now though, but it gives me peace of mind to have it. Now that I'm back in the saddle and driving my RAV4 more, the battery is 80% - 100% chaged whenever I check it's voltage.

Now if I expect I won't be driving my XSE for a while, I plug in a battery minder to keep the battery charged. My Toyota dealer recommended the NOCO Genius 5, and installed it for me on the frame in the engine compartment and wired it through the electrical system to the 12 v battery which is in the rear of the XSE. From what I've found out online about the AGM batteries that stop-start vehicles use, if they get low on charge or go dead, they develop some resistance to being recharged. Plugging in the battery minder connected to the battery apparently reverses that conditon and rejuvenates the battery.

I got this one, bonus points because it has a built-in AC output for lakeside laptop work.

I'd go through Amazon, or 3rd party retailer for these things rather than the manf. direct (NOCO for example). These devices are not buy it for life by no stretch of the imagination FYI, my friend has a NOCO GB40 he bought from their site and it died, he's still going back and forth with them for an RMA 6 weeks later and they are not covering shipping to the US from Canada. At least with Amazon or C. Tire you can have a tasteful chat to twist their arm for a return/refund, or just buy a new one and put the defective one in the box lol :p

I bought a lead acid one from harbor freight out an abundance of caution because I was going to be leaving my vehicle in an airport parking garage for 13 days straight during winter, in a foreign country where I don’t have cell service. Flight landed at about 10PM jumped into my RAV4h and it started just fine with no jump needed.

But my purchase wasn’t a waste, there was another gentleman with a much older RAV4 (2007ish) that needed a jump because he had left his headlights and radio on while waiting for his daughter to arrive.

I got this one on Amazon. It looks identical to one that Consumer's Report recommended, but it has a different name. It was $85 on Amazon. They had cheaper ones, and pricier ones too. I make a point of storing it with 50% charge. I had the mysterious run down 12v problem just once in 10K miles, but this is
assurance and insurance when out of town overnight.

I just receive my from Audew.
Looks exactly the same except all accents are red. And I got a foldable charger with usb type A and C outputs. I like the way it looks and feel. A case is nice and sturdy so unit is well protected.. will see how long it lasts.

Provided you exactly follow the handbook instructions you don't particularly need a heavy duty jump start pack. All that's necessary is to provide enough boost to bring the car's electronic systems to life. Its the traction battery that turns the engine over. I have a relatively small 7AH sealed lead acid battery for this purpose plus some short jump leads. Which ever solution you go for you will need to remember to charge your auxiliary system every few months to prolong its life. When I researched this I couldn't find anything at reasonable price which wasn't of Chinese origin.
I strongly advise that you do not leave any external supply connected a moment longer than is necessary to get to the READY condition because the traction battery/inverter can really punch out a very high current once it is switched on.

Not 100% sure but in normal operation on hybrid, accessory mode only on for 15 or 20 min. After that it turns off automatically , or at least it should. I never tried in on mine 2020 xle hybrid but read it on one of the forums. I know for sure that is how it works on 2021 Forester Premium. My father was very surprised when he was listening to radio and the car whent off 🤪😸

Why are you planning to carry anything around. Aren't you keep it in a car?
Having a higher capacity pack help to help others. Yes you have a hybrid but you can't give a boost to someone else with it. I have 2 cars , only one of them is hybrid. If I need to boost the second car I need something capable. And the size and weight difference is not that much.

I am sure it is not the best available but I bought a "Type S" from Costco about 5 years ago for my daughter when she had my 2013 RAV4 in Baltimore and it bailed her out once and she has used it many times to "jump start" friends cars when needed. There is also a degree of safety built in that you don't get with jump starting from one car's battery to another (both safety of the vehicle and personal safety). The system verifies polarity and charge level before making a connection. It made me feel a lot better that she had it.

Yes - It was very much like that one (probably an earlier model). It was easy to charge, easy to check the charge level, and would charge a cell phone in a pinch too. The only warning I remember was to avoid keeping it in a hot car for extended periods. The challenge is making sure it is charged and available when you need it but my daughter was very responsible about it (I think living in a bad part of town helped with that).
