I paid a deposit for a 2022 Rav4 XSE with premium package, including 6.6 Kw onboard charger. Don’t know when I’ll get it. Excited about it though.

A question in the meanwhile: Would plugging it into a 110V socket lead to disaster? My wife has a Prius Prime. She plugs it into a 110V socket nightly. I plan to install a 240V socket soon but not until after I get the vehicle. Can I charge it using my wife’s Prius’s cabling until my 240V infrastructure is installed?

Thanks

There will be no problem using a 120V socket. The only issue would be if you're using a bunch of adapters to "step up" to a larger socket designed for 208-240V and an EVSE expecting more than 32A being available to it. Only then would you have a problem, and I would hope most people are smart enough not to attempt that.

An EVSE's job is to communicate to the car how much power the car is allowed to draw. The car will then draw the lower of either its own maximum draw or the EVSE's stated maximum capacity. A 120V EVSE will communicate to the car, "Hey, don't draw more than 12A." The car will then only draw 12A on the single energized phase.

I used my wife’s Prius Prime EVSE on the dedicated 120v line to the garage on my R4Prime w Premium pkg for the first year. Then I finally finished installing my inexpensive MUSTART (240v, 26amp max) EVSE and now I’m enjoying quicker charging times and more use of departure-time scheduled charging.
