Many remote starters are compatible with the FOB. I have a Viper system in my car. One minor gripe is that opening any door shuts the car off again. The installer told me that this is limitation imposed by Toyota.

When we purchased our rav4 limited from the dealership in 2013, we had them put one in. It works but once the door opens it turns off. Some of the after markets work better I've heard. But it is doable.

 

I'm in the same position as the OP (rick24).

So am I understanding it right that no matter if you have a dealer-installed remote starter or a remote starter installed by another company, that the car will still turn off when you open a door?
