Seems to be leaking spark tubes, not seals, on 3.5l 2gr-fe engine - unsure how to fix.

Hi,

I’m still working on my friends 2009 3.5l Rav 4 that I posted previously about the fuel pump and fuel pressure issues which seem to be resolved.

I’m changing her spark plugs now. When I pulled out the left back and middle back spark plugs they both had oil on the threads and the back left spark plug was in pretty bad shape.

I thought spark plug tube seals but sticking an endoscope in both holes shows they are spotless. So some more reading says it’s likely the bottom of the spark plug tubes leaking.…. Is there anything else that could cause oil on the spark plug threads?

I see posts saying some of these engines have pressed in spark plug tubes, and some have screwed in spark tubes. Sounds like the screw in type are easy-ish to fix, but the press in kind require a special tool.

I’m not having luck figuring out what kind her engine has, how does one determine that? Nor what exactly the tool is called, and if it’s something I could do if it is the press in kind.

I saw some talk and images for older Rav engines showing the screw in type. It shows threads on both ends and a nut. So I’m kind of thinking her engine has the press in kind.

I then found a video where a guy was working on the press in type, completely different engine type but I’m kind of thinking it might be a similar, “simple”, procedure. He pulled them out using a pair of pliers and the simply put sealant on the end and then put a block of wood on the end and knocked them down into place.

Does anyone know if that’s how it would go with her 2gr engine?

Second question: how the heck do you get to the valve cover bolts over near the firewall? The one is right next to some ac lines. I was curious so I stuck a socket with a swivel and extension down there and couldn’t see how I could get that bolt off.
