I don't know how you could possibly avoid it. I'm certain that insurance companies are not that dumb anymore to think that someone can't steal your car if you have an immobilizer.

You could waste all your time thinking about the 'what if's'. I've given up worrying about it and just enjoy it for what it is - a nice car. It won't be the last one I own, and if something happens, I can always get it fixed or replaced.

This will keep them away if you place it in a window.

I have a tracking & trace system ... so if it gets stolen, I can see where it is, I can remotely turn off the fuel pump or prevent it from being started. Great system. At the same time I can always track it on line while it is not stolen and see where my wife is taking it.

you mean, to see if she is faithful?

p.s.
but what is it to you for if mafia stole your car, you won't get it back anyway...

Yes, they will get to it if they really want to but you can't stop trying to make it hard for them. Make it as inconvenient as possible and they may just move on to the easier target. :)

My RAV was broken in over the weekend :(.

They smashed the front passenger window and took a bag of paper maps.

WTF.

No, that's what happened. A bag of maps. Paper maps from AAA.

Also that same night, another flat tire.

From someone who has personally experienced having a car stolen I have learned one thing, if they want it bad enough NOTHING is going to stop them from taking it.
If they wana that bad the will do what ever to steal it

my lasst car had two-way alarm + auto lock it was stolen:-(

My friend Saw in his apartment someone trying to steal a car with a tow truck lucky the alarm came on N the owner came out

I kind of like a hidden kill switch. The pro thieves come with all the standard theft tools to steal a particular setup; immobilizer defeater, ignition switch keys, slim jim, etc., but with a hidden switch, they might give up quickly before finding the switch.

Most pros want to get the vehicle started and out of the area as quick as possible. Even the club slows them down a little although a 21 volt battery operated cutoff tool can slice the steering wheel in a few seconds (it is just a little obvious).

I think a hidden switch that breaks the fuel pump circuit or the starter relay is a pretty good idea.
My friend had 2 hidden kill switches on his GMC Jimmy (for fuel pump and starter) While it stopped his car from getting stolen for a year,he would almost always get a busted drives side window from pissed off thieves. Then one night he was at a house party and he had to park a few blocks away, car was finally stolen that night,a person who was watching out his window said it took them 10 minutes to find the switches (they were both under the drivers seat) Once they found the wires,it wasn't hard to locate the switch. He never saw that Jimmy again. This was 2 years ago. (We suspect its long been chopped since we've seen some parts of it turn up in the last 4 months, but my buddy has no bills/warranty cards or pics to prove the stuff is his.)

Moral of the story:When thieves want something they will get it,if they don't get it,a better thief will.

I know the theme of most of the post here are, if they want it that bad, it's there's. Well I for one am not going to hand it over on a silver plate. I will make it the most inconvenient for them as I can. And if I catch them in the act, I wish not to scare them away but to inflict bodily harm.

Also, making a ho-hum car (which the rav is to most people), that's inconvenient to steal is an effective deterrent if it's sitting next to a more exciting car like a bmw 335i or something. I suggest parking your car with visual theft deterrents, amongst a fleet of much more expensive cars. An easy feat in the popular places of where I live. Lol, there seems to be more upper teir cars (bmw, lexus, etc) on the road than their lesser brethrens (honduh, toyota, etc).

Amazing that this thread is back. I live in a crappy neighborhood in Pittsburgh and haven't had anyone attempt to steal my Rav. Honestly, if they want it, they can have it...I just don't want it back.

As a former Professional Repossessor, let me say that tricks like the club and kill switches do more to make you feel good than they do to prevent the theft of your vehicle. After recovering 300 or 400 cars in my first year on the job, I could pick the lock on almost every variant of the club in under 15 seconds and I had seen just about every iteration of the kill switch idea, so I knew where to look for them and how to disable them quickly.

 I promise you that not only will these folks take your vehicle, but getting into a confrontation with them will end badly for you in one way or another 100% of the time.

Maybe one switch could be wired to sound the horn for a period.

It would be good if they would keep the professional thieves out of action longer.

Well its too late to see now :p. We were thinking it was one of his ex-friends that got his car stolen,my friend pissed him off and he got somebody to steal it. (He didn't know were the kill switches were, but he knew the car had them, all the thief had to to was find were the wires were) GMC jimmy's were a hot item 2 years ago (the trucks, and SUV versions) and I told him not to get such a popular 'thief's' car,but no one listens to me...

For the record,no one even looks at my Rav4.1,and nothing has been stolen from it yet,I even leave my back door unlocked (because the key won't lock it )

Theft protection

I had all the important parts engraved (The sherlock system).
My insurance company would not insure me if I did not get at least the cheapest Boomerang system so I got the "Boomerang spy" localisation system; it comes with window stickers (hopefully for the price they charge !)

I leave the RAV4 at home and take my Camry.

At home, I park my cars in the garage. If I go somewhere, I try to park in a highly visible area with traffic, but if the thieves want my car that bad, then can have it.
