Sport Mode

My wife complains about her 2014 RAV4 always going to the economy mode when she starts it up.

Is there any way to set the Sport model so that it always comes up first?

I did look in the owner's manual and on this site and couldn't find anything.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Is there any way to tape the button down?

Maybe this has been discussed but perhaps there is an option within techstream that would allow the default setting to be set to sport mode?

Is the vehicle actually going into dedicated ECO mode? As in throttle response and transmission shifting being limited to increase fuel economy? Same as when the ECO button is activated?

Or does the ECO light illuminate when the engine is not working hard during normal driving, such as when idling, coasting or cruising at a constant speed? And then turn off while accelerating, working up a grade, etc?

Our Rav does the latter. In normal driving mode, the ECO light while turn on and off as the needs of the engine decrease and increase. Otherwise it drives and operates normally. I just assumed this was normal, it's not like it changes anything about the vehicle's performance. Only when we actually push the ECO button to put it into ECO mode is throttle response and transmission shifting noticeably muted.

If your Rav is actually defaulting to true ECO mode on it's own, that is something I would suggest visiting your dealer for.

Dehill.. ask your wife if she is looking at the green "ECO" light on the left of the instrument cluster, or is it that she has the "ECO MODE" indicator on in the right side of the cluster.

If it's the ECO on the left, that is your RAV telling her that she is driving in a very fuel efficient manner.
However, if it's the ECO MODE on the right, then that is a selected drive mode she has activated by pressing the button down in front of the gear shifter.

If the ECO MODE or SPORT MODE are lit (only one can be at a time), then simply press the appropriate button to disengage and revert back to a NORMAL driving mode.

^ Unfortunately Toyota doesn't let you do that, probably because it may hurt their EPA rating, but that's just a guess. Press ECO mode to turn ECO mode off, this will be normal mode. Same story with sport mode, pressing sport again will put the car back into normal mode. Car should start back up in normal mode (neither eco or sport light will be on) the next time you start the car.

As the attached schematic indicates, the SPORT switch is simply a momentary switch that grounds pin 9 of the engine ECM when it is depressed.
If you really, really, really wanted to always be in SPORT mode, you could wire up a relay's coil to the Start signal, and gnd, and have the relay's contacts ground pin 9 whenever the vehicle is started. This momentary ground would simulate pressing the SPORT pushbutton, and the vehicle would go into SPORT mode.

You could do the same thing much simpler using only a capacitor and resistor.
