how is everyone getting such high MPG

I can barely get past 38 miles per gallon and thats driving on ECO and barely stepping on the gas hard.

I have a limited with roof rack and 18inch wheels. Could that be the culprit?
What are the aerodynamics of the roof rack? Are you doing lots of driving above about 60? A friend of mine had a Subaru Crosstrek with ski racks. He was driving between California and Colorado repeatedly. I told him to take the ski racks off so he would save on gas, and when he finally did, he commented on how much more range, as in distance to empty he got with the ski racks off.
I just got back from a trip out to Nevada, cruise set at 75-85. Average for the trip was 35mpg.

This is the first tank I've had that is all commute - 70 miles round trip, varying from 25-70, with only about 8 highway miles at 70, many highway miles at 55 or 50, and probably 10 miles on city streets. After 3/4 of a tank, I saw that I was still achieving 49 reported MPG, so the last couple trips did a little extra work to see what I could eke out.

By the time I was about 4 miles from the station, with DTE 3 miles, I was at 50.1 reported (yes, I pulled over to take the photo). Yowza, never thought I'd achieve that! Of course, I figured the actual would be lower based on the last couple fill ups. To my surprise, using the car odometer and the gas pump at 11.9 gallons, it calculated at 51.5MPG! Given that I'm seeing a variance of +/- 1.5mpg between car and calculated, I almost certainly hit 50 on this tank. Trip A was reset on the last fillup, so 613 miles on this tank.

Now, this won't be a typical tank, temps have been hot, so there's little engine warm-up, I was the sole driver this tank, and I'm a modest hyper-miler. I don't do any crazy things like drafting or driving below the limit. Carrying no luggage, topper, or trailer, so it's probably about as good as it's going to get. Still fun, though! My cumulative average is 44.6, though I expect that'll go down significantly with an extended interstate trip coming up towing a small U-Haul.

I also see that my instrument cluster needs dusting. Stopped on the shoulder 3-4 miles before the gas station:

Only took 11.9 gallons, no top-off.

That actualy calculates to 51.5 MPG (613/11.9 = 51.5) which is unbelievable. I suspect you did mostly in-town driving. Highway cruising definitely won't return numbers like this.

HI new member here. Bought my 2021 rav4 xle hybrid the week before the pipeline got hacked in the southern USA. My area was without gas for over a week. I wasn't worried though. I went from a car getting 12mpg on a good day to this. Even driving in sport mode most of the time I've never gotten less than 43mpg.

I've been driving my 2021 hybrid since last October. Gas mileage has been from the low 30's into the high 40's. The best was a 30 mile trip when I reached 58. Worst was 33. I've noticed no difference in whether or not the cross bars are on the roof for my kayak, nor driving in either Eco or Normal modes ( only noticed a less responsive gas pedal). The noticeable differences in mpg, in my experience, lies in hilly vs flat terrain, wind (with our against strong winds), and outside temps-- mid to high 30's mpg in the cold of winter, and mid to high 40's in the summer. (My driving is mostly mixed, BTW.). I suppose my annual mpg through all seasons and conditions averages about what Toyota claims.

Well, 51.5 is still my best tank so far. Last tank was 48.0, all commute. I’ve found short trips can give misleadingly low or high numbers, so I’ve been tracking only tank averages, both what the car says, and calculated at the pump. For any given tank the car display can be off +/-2 mpg, so I post here only calculated based on pump & odometer. One tank the car displayed 5 mpg higher than actual.

Lifetime is 43, dragged down quite a bit by the trailer towing trip, and to a lesser extent the topper trip.

I’ve broken down my 35 mile commute, into these speed limit categories:

6 miles @ 25-40
21 miles @ 50-55 (City Interstate)
8 miles @ 70 (Rural Interstate)

There are only a couple steep hills, otherwise lightly rolling terrain, with some coasting opportunities (e.g. speed control set, but ICE not running). Some of the 50-60 mph zones have backups in the afternoon, which increases mpg.

Two steady 70mph trips for a whole tank were right about 40mpg (Midwest interstate).

This may be a dumb question but how do I find my lifetime mileage on my 21' hybrid? When I switch between ODO, Trip A and Trip B, it reads the same current mpg...

It doesn’t keep lifetime mpg, I use fuelly to keep track, recording every fillup. The MID can display tank average or “total” with manual reset, or “trip”, which resets when the car is turned off. It’s not tied to Trip A/B (which is weird, since my Prius does that). It’s also missing the monthly average for last 6 months, that the Prius has.

So what is Total? I always figured it was MPG since a manual reset. My displayed Total has always pretty well tracked my lifetime fuelly figures (going to be a bit off because the first/dealer tank wasn't entered/tracked.) It doesn't reset when the car is turned off. When the car is turned on, it displays what it did when the car is turned off. And since my fuelly fills vary wildly and my Total doesn't...
