EDIT: You cannot unplug the sound device without it kicking an error in the MIDI as @bertschb indicates. I ended up just doing a massive tape job on the device to silence it shown in post 22

I have had it with the choir. I assassinated them.....

You need a 10mm, a 12mm and the ability to remove 5 friction snaps (reuse).

Remove the five snaps and two 10mm bolts holding the radiator trim cover. You will need to do some wiggling to get it past the hood release handle. Then you will see the culprit.

Simple connector (I taped up and zip tied it to the horn harness). A single 12mm bolt holds it in place.

Put it back together. Enjoy sanity!!!

Can I assume you found the source of the noise maker on your hybrid when you put into reverse or is this something different? I can't imagine they put the noise maker in the front when the sound should be coming from the rear. I have a gas version so what do I know :censored:

Lol, they did. Took one for a test drive and was a very odd sound. For me it sounds like a noisy bearing and yes it comes from the front! Why not a lower volume speaker in the rear? Dunno. In the front so it sounds like a fake engine with bad bearings?

Hahahaha. . . . . wasn't it someone on this forum? Referred to it as the "Angles of Death" from War Of The Worlds.

Is that in the same area as the two horns?

Yes its a noise generator. Just two wires. I can imagine you would put duct tape over it and it would reduce the noise. I just removed it because I can sorta see the lame way we need to protect people from themselves while backing up. But there is zero reason I need to be on at any volume going forward and that was the point that broke the camels back.

I agree if I could alter time/volume...etc it would be way more cool. But I can easily replace it all prior to resale (which I would do anyway).

And for the litigious worry warts...when you go through a parking lot and "almost" get hit...is it you heard the cars exhaust or saw the car move or saw the reverse lights? And were you paying attention to vehicle moving around you or distracted by something else? My Fusion isnt going to alert you when I back out due to exhaust note and its not a Hybrid.

Yes that is correct. After I taped up the exposed connector I zip tied it to that horn harness so it wont flop around.

“So Mr. RAV4h XSE, isn’t it true that you willfully and deliberately disabled a critical safety device that could have prevented these tragic injuries to my poor client, who is now unable to provide for his family and needs constant assistance with simple daily tasks?”

I’ll be leaving mine connected, annoying as it is. ;)

So, simply unplug the unit, right? Or did you need to remove it from yhe car? Thx

Considering how many Rav4 Hybrids are sold each year, it's just a matter of time before a device shows up on eBay for 20 bucks to defeat this stupid speaker. A simple device to attach to the wire that gets unplugged from the speaker to complete the circuit and make the car think the speaker is attached.

Just a matter of time...

There was another thread here where we posted how to make a simple device with a connector and resistor that disables the noise and doesn’t give you an error. However the mods here deleted that post and shut the thread down. If you search the Prius forums they have it there

No, this isn't my daily driver. Its my wifes. I went on two errands and didn't see the error message. Once @bertschb indicated he got an error I texted my wife to ask if she saw it. She did. So I am not excluded; I get the message too.

And yes the error is just by unplugging it. Its a stupid device that only helps those not paying attention (walking by cars with their heads in their phones). What made me irritated is I head my wife pulling up into the driveway. Just zero reason to have a "hey, I am driving here" alert message.

So by doing a major muffle job I am at peace. LOL. I would have to assume for all the Prius out there someon should have an external plug in device. However I will peruse the Prius forums to see about building a small box to side step it.

A backup warning noise from the front of the car?? Dumb! If anyone gets sued it should be Toyota. At least my '18 Accord Hybrid doesn't have one and it's completely silent in reverse.

I think that humans that need to hear a vehicle versus see a vehicle to be "safe" is a ridiculous argument to stand on. I emphasize with my kids to 1) not run through parking lots. 2) Head on a swivel because most drivers are not paying attention and just whip out of spaces. 3) Dont walk right against the cars.

Long story short, its the drivers mandatory responsibility to pay attention to what is going on around them and operate their vehicle in a safe and controlled manner.

I think of older people and little kids who can’t move quickly and need whatever help they can get. Cars backing out of parking spots can be blocked by other vehicles like vans, big trucks, etc. Yes, it’s a nanny society thing (and yes I DO now use some of the Rav’s built-in safety nannies) but, IMHO, if it prevents some little kid or someone’s gramma from getting backed over, I’m down with it.

I certainly understand the desire to delete this noise. Personally, I just add it to the list of hybrid-specific sounds I’ve actually enjoyed through the years just because they are unique/quirky. It adds to the spaceship-like hyper drive experience that I find interesting.?

I agree with your premise (save lives/injury). But I should not be forced to use it to make sure "you" (generic not specific) are safe and cozy. And kids racing through parking lots is a huge pet peeve. Grab your kids hands! I was/am "that" dad where I get dirty looks from people as my kid is screaming bloody murder because he didnt want to hold my hand. I dont care what others think about that...my kid is with me attached to me and I am doing my job. He has long since grown beyond that but I can remember a lot of condescending looks. Dont care.

Again goes back to the driver anyway operating their vehicle in a safe and controlled manner. With the backup sensors, backup camera, pedestrian crossing auto braking...good LORD. If you hit someone...something is dredfully wrong.

My goodness, it sounds like you’re an advocate for personal responsibility! We are a rare breed these days. It’s going to get to a point where nobody can fart in a public park on a windy day without someone claiming they were affected and demanding a public groveling apology.

Blind people shouldn't be in my driveway when I back out of my garage at 4AM. There should at least be a silence option like there is with the Parking Assist function when that starts beeping...

With the backup camera my Accord has I really don't know how I could back over a person. They'd almost have to be deliberately trying to get hit. If that's the case no audible alert is going to deter them.

How do you get off the friction clips? I checked out disconnecting mine but I didn’t want to force it.

If you aren’t bothered by that noise you a) never drive with the windows open b) have lost the ability to hear that frequency c) already have tinnitus.

The back up noise is simply too loud - to the point of being a nuisance and a form of noise pollution. I have to parallel park on a crowded street and the choir announces my comings and goings. It is inconsiderate.

That said, I’m not reversing all that often so more of my ire is at the forward sound. I have not lost my hearing yet and having a high frequency drone in the back of my ears is maddening and probably will cause me to lose that frequency eventually.

There is like a center piece you can see that sets in the whole pin. You use a small blade screwdriver or similar that allows you to get underneath. You pull that up; not yank, or you might be chasing it...lol. You will feel it hit a detent and then you can pull out the pin.
