Confirmed. . Wifes does it as well. I used dense foam door insulation about 3/4 wide and laid down strips of it and stuffed int the speaker area as well. I then duct taped around the whole thing several times and then electrical tape to make it go black.

There are snap on the lid as I wanted to open up the sound device to see if I could clip a wire or unsolder something. No dice. The clips are flimsy and there was no way I could separate the case.

I then tested it before putting it back together. I can barely hear it in reverse mode and cant hear it at all in forward. Reassembled everything and from the cabin I cannot hear it in reverse.

If it's that easy to change, then someone will make a replacement that sounds like a chime or something. Maybe like a voice saying, "HEY! WATCH OUT!"

Considering how many Rav4 Hybrids are sold each year, it's just a matter of time before a device shows up on eBay for 20 bucks to defeat this stupid speaker. A simple device to attach to the wire that gets unplugged from the speaker to complete the circuit and make the car think the speaker is attached.

Just a matter of time...

There was another thread here where we posted how to make a simple device with a connector and resistor that disables the noise and doesn’t give you an error. However the mods here deleted that post and shut the thread down. If you search the Prius forums they have it there

Yes its a noise generator. Just two wires. I can imagine you would put duct tape over it and it would reduce the noise. I just removed it because I can sorta see the lame way we need to protect people from themselves while backing up. But there is zero reason I need to be on at any volume going forward and that was the point that broke the camels back.
Am I hearing you right that the ‘Choir of Angels’ was singing while also in Drive? I’ve never heard that on mine. Only in reverse.

“So Mr. RAV4h XSE, isn’t it true that you willfully and deliberately disabled a critical safety device that could have prevented these tragic injuries to my poor client, who is now unable to provide for his family and needs constant assistance with simple daily tasks?”

I’ll be leaving mine connected, annoying as it is. ;)
Even with it connected, if you back into someone enough to disable them, its always going to be your fault. Also, I'm not sure how someone will associate that sound with a car going in reverse.

A backup warning noise from the front of the car?? Dumb! If anyone gets sued it should be Toyota. At least my '18 Accord Hybrid doesn't have one and it's completely silent in reverse.

Yes but trust me, it’s loud enough to be quite audible at the back of the car also!

So, i am a bit confused here. Are we getting codes by just unplugging the device? I thought Colonel didn't get any code on his? Maybe that's depending on the trim and option?
No, this isn't my daily driver. Its my wifes. I went on two errands and didn't see the error message. Once @bertschb indicated he got an error I texted my wife to ask if she saw it. She did. So I am not excluded; I get the message too.

And yes the error is just by unplugging it. Its a stupid device that only helps those not paying attention (walking by cars with their heads in their phones). What made me irritated is I head my wife pulling up into the driveway. Just zero reason to have a "hey, I am driving here" alert message.

So by doing a major muffle job I am at peace. LOL. I would have to assume for all the Prius out there someon should have an external plug in device. However I will peruse the Prius forums to see about building a small box to side step it.

You're doing God's work, Colonel! This could be a good side hustle for you.... "Colonel's Choir Quietener' has a nice ring to it. I wonder if the dealership would give you flack at all for doing that?

At that point I would just post schematics under a pseudoname. :)

As long as they dont damage my vehicle in their possession I really don't care what dealership would say. LOL.

I believe the thought is that since most normal, modern cars are heard by the up front engine, Toyo decided to put the noisemaker in the front too.?

I think that humans that need to hear a vehicle versus see a vehicle to be "safe" is a ridiculous argument to stand on. I emphasize with my kids to 1) not run through parking lots. 2) Head on a swivel because most drivers are not paying attention and just whip out of spaces. 3) Dont walk right against the cars.

Long story short, its the drivers mandatory responsibility to pay attention to what is going on around them and operate their vehicle in a safe and controlled manner.

I certainly understand the desire to delete this noise. Personally, I just add it to the list of hybrid-specific sounds I’ve actually enjoyed through the years just because they are unique/quirky. It adds to the spaceship-like hyper drive experience that I find interesting.?

I think of older people and little kids who can’t move quickly and need whatever help they can get. Cars backing out of parking spots can be blocked by other vehicles like vans, big trucks, etc. Yes, it’s a nanny society thing (and yes I DO now use some of the Rav’s built-in safety nannies) but, IMHO, if it prevents some little kid or someone’s gramma from getting backed over, I’m down with it.
