Top tires (i.e., Michelin CrossClimate 2) for your RAV4 will run you about $800-$900 per set including installation. Your factory Dunlops will last 25000-35000 miles so I would skip that protection money then use the money to buy a nice set of Michelins in a few years. Tires from the factory are not great but will last you a few years. The 72 months (6 year) protection plan is not a good deal because you get the factory 5 year/60000 powertrain warranty so you are paying $1500 to cover one extra year.

 

My XLE Premium Hybrid came from the factory with Michelin Primacy A/S tires which are much better than the Dunlops that are supplied on some Rav4s.

I'm wondering if Toyota is putting Michelins on the hybrid cars and Dunlops on the gas only cars?

Many thanks. There is no discussion there about the Tire&Wheel Warranty, only the Extended Warranty. Perhaps the Tire&Wheel Warranty is not even worth considering then. I would like to get an extended warranty, in part as an inflation hedge. They offered me 10y/10k, $0 ded, at $2100, down from the initial $2660, when I was reserving the car and said I could add it at the closing, but not after. This is still quite a bit higher than the $1360 mentioned in that thread.

 

No to extended warranties or prepaid maintenance crap. It makes them money.
Take that $1625 and put it in an s&p 500 fund and withdraw $ if you need to in a few years.

 

This wheel and tire "warranty" is a high profit proposition for the dealer, buying that would help fund the dealer's purchase of a high value property on the French Riviera. Agree with suggestions posted #s 2 & 4.

Toyotas and Toyota hybrids in particular are some of the most reliable vehicles ever. Please do not waste $2k on an extended warranty.
Have you read the warranty booklet yet? A lot of the major items are covered for longer than the bumper to bumper. If you live in a CARB state, the emissions warranty also extends coverage for many things.

An inflation hedge is a 2.5% 30 year mortgage, not an extended warranty.

 

Tire warranty on new cars are for manufacturing defects only. There is no warranty for "road hazards" or life (wear). I have purchased a road hazard warranty from Discount Tire for new cars in the past. It is about $25 to $30 per tire.

 

Thank you for the information. Presumably Discount Tire offers road hazards insurance only for the tires they sell. Is there a way I can get such insurance for the tires on my new RAV4 Prime SE?

 

Tire & wheel warranty? Uh, no. Now the extended Toyota warranty worked out well for me. If you buy that one don't add it to the financing just pay it.

 

Please don't buy a tire warranty. You have a spare tire if something happens. Use the tire warranty money to buy better tires when the originals need changing. New tires will last at least three years. If the new tires only last 50% of the mileage warranty, you can replace them with brand new tires for 50% off what you originally paid if you buy them from Discount Tires. Now that's a deal!
