I am not sure how much space is available on the 4.4 but on the 2008 4.3 I had to "remove the top plastic radiator cover and work down between the A/C condenser and grille".

I have big hands and I was able to complete the job easily. I think on the 2009-2012, the horns are place differently and the bumper has to come off.

And yes, the bumper is easy to remove; about 30 retainers to remove if you want the whole bumper off. I suppose you could just detach half the bumper for this job.
