I bought a 2023 RAV4 in November of 2022 and last week the multimedia screen stopped working. I was driving and the screen rebooted 3 times in 5 minutes and then the by the 4th time it turned off I was unable to turn it on. When the car is on reverse the monitor shows the backup camera and as soon as I put it in drive the screen goes black. At the same time the USB outlet doesn’t charge the phone as well. I sent the car to the dealership today and they did a reset and the screen started working, the dealer said that there is no guarantee the fix will last as a lot of people are reporting the same issue for this model and Toyota is working on a permanent software update. I started driving and the same happened, the screens rebooted 3 times and the 4th time it turned off, it didn’t turn on again. Is someone else having the same issues? Any updates from Toyota on when will they have a permanent software update for this issue? My dealer didn’t have an answer on this and they said it could take weeks to a year until Toyota comes with a software update. It is annoying driving a brand new car and the screen to not work, meaning no GPS, radio etc.

I have the exact same problem with my 2022 RAV. It occurred at around 44k miles. When I took it into our Toyota dealer the service rep said they have “seen a lot of these” same problems. He quoted me $1200 to replace it but said maybe Toyota will have a fix or recall in the future. I have chosen not to replace/fix it due to the cost and in the hopes it will be recalled. My theory is these were manufactured during the global chip shortage and it might have something to do with inferior hardware. I hope Toyota offers to replace or fix it at their cost. Otherwise it will be my last Toyota I buy.

Welcome!

Sorry to hear that. I would not be expect there will be a recall. AFAIK, no update has ever resolved this. Plus, unfortunately, your warranty for it is already expired. They tried the same nonsense with us until we contacted Toyota Consumer Care. They finally replaced ours but it was still under warranty.

The manufacturer of the faulty head units is Denso. Their products are used by a number of other brands as well. IIRC Subaru owners had a class action lawsuit for the same thing. So the problem isn’t solely with Toyota.

You have a few more options. One is to buy a used, known working head unit online or from a wrecking yard. It’s not that difficult to replace or you could have a stereo shop do it. Another is to buy an aftermarket unit. Crutchfield has a few good options. Again, DIY or buy one from a reputable shop and have it installed.

Otherwise you’ll be listening to “The Sounds of Silence” for a long time. ;)

Probably not what you wanted to hear but hope it helps a little.
