Help, my lovely automatic rav4 has a new light on the dash board which isnt going out. Its an exclamation mark - !

i have no idea what's wrong, have been through the book and all the web sites i can find - not even listed as a fault.

I have a 2 hour journey to night and am worried we won't make it. It was on for about 90% of my half hour journey to work this morning.

Welcome to the forums bambibabe29 :D

I also have a 1998 RAV4, and according to the owners manual, it is a Brake System Warning Light.

Your problem could be one of these:

-Parking brake reminder (make sure the parking brake is fully released)

-Low Brake Fluid level warning (check the fluid level in the see-through brake fluid reservoir)

If both are okay, then the manual suggests that you have the system checked by a Toyota dealer.

Good luck, I hope you are able to get this fixed. In the mean time; please drive safely if it is your brakes. :D

It could also be the brake fluid sensor. I drove a car once (a Nissan) where the light came on because the sensor had become loose or worn. I would touch the lid on the reservoir and the light would go off.

Best check everything though, just in case.

New used Rav4, unknown warning light please help

I've had my Rav for two days. Day 2 this light came on, and has stayed on. I'm attaching a photo. It's an exclamation mark within a "U" shaped graphic. Here is the explanation from my users manual:

"The engine switch is turned to the "ON" position to indicate that a system check is being performed. They will turn off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds. There may be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come on or it it does not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer for details"

Anyone have experience with this. I'm worried I've bought a problem car. Will take car in on Monday, but wanted to ask if anyone else here might be able to give me some insight to this issue. Wondering if it's big or small problem? Thanks!!
