How do I check Tire pressure?

Tire pressure gauge. It's a good idea to keep one in the car anyway.

That looks like a high quality gauge. Most of the stick type gauges you buy at Wally World are junk.

I have my old German Drager gauge and a genuine Porsche dial gauge that I use. The Drager is going on 60 years old now and still reads the same as the Porsche gauge.

 

Picked up my 2024 this past Thursday and I spent a few frustrating hours trying to get the tire pressure values to come up on the instrument display. After doing some digging around on this forum I found that for some unknown reason Toyota Canada doesn't seem to think we need it here in Canada. My 2007 Ford Explorer has a TPMS!

 

It's because it's government-mandated in the U.S. and apparently not in Canada. As much as I enjoy the convenience of seeing the tire pressures displayed on the dash, I personally believe the concept of mandating such a thing is preposterous.

 

I will be honest - I find those tire pressure sensors unreliable. It will randomly say one of my tire is much lower than the other ones and then check 30 mins later and everything is the same. I get that temperature fluctuations but my golden rule is to fill em up at my local costco once a month

 

Does your Costco do that for you because you purchased tires from them?

 

Well, it might not be super accurate, but then again, better than just having a tire pressure light and wondering which one it is.

With the Prius v, I sort of had that problem, looked at all my tires and not an issue, turned out it was the spare that also had a sensor at the time.

Trained me to ignore it and complain to the service department when I see it, which was bad when it happened on my R4H. It was a 2020 R4H, and I ignored it cause it was cold, but then wondering why my car was pulling slightly to the right.

Turns out I drove on a flat tire (Front right) for 3ish miles, nail in it. Luckily, I didn't bork the rim, but I did ruin the tire wall so had to get a new tire.

Having at least an idea of which tire is really low is kind of helpful in a way.

 

Just a note; even if you did have tire pressures available on the app, it’s not real time unless you’re operating the vehicle. When operating the vehicle the tire pressure is available on the screen which is easier to access and view. If you’re not operating the vehicle the app gives you tire pressures as of the last time you used the vehicle, not the current tire pressure. You could have a slow going flat tire the app could show tire pressure good as of the last you operated the vehicle.

The on screen individual tire pressure is useful to know what tire may be losing pressure while operating the vehicle.

current pressures start a minute after vehicle starts rolling.

if vehicle sits for 20 mins or more the sensors do not transmit
and only wake up when (a) rolling or (b) sudden pressure change, like letting a lot
of air out and refilling
