Hi All,

I’m about to purchase a RAV4 2019 Hybrid. At the dealership, they offered me a 5 year warranty for the windshield for around $1,500. They said it was a good deal because for the type of windshield we have, which involves sensors. The finance guy at the dealership said none of the current car insurance covers the total cost for three types of windshields. I have State Famr insurance and will be checking in within them about this.

Anyone here have experience with your insurance and the coverage of a “smart” car type of windshield?

I have State Farm also, but I'm not aware of any special riders to cover the windshield. My dealer offered me a number of extra protections, but windshield was NOT one of them. I'll call State Farm on Monday for more information.

Mine was replaced this week. I have full glass coverage with my insurance company. Cost for parts, install and recalibration done by Toyota dealer $1543!

So basically if you happen to be unlucky and replace windshields often then might be a good deal. I never had to replace windshields in couple decades for 15 cars i owned so I didn't even know the cost.

As an aside, my wife's 2016 Prius' windshield was replaced last year. No glass coverage with insurance, so just paid the comprehensive deductible (for us, it was $250...sorry, don't know how much it would have been out of pocket) for the replacement. Recalibration was not covered by insurance and it would have been 600-700 range - we didn't do it because don't use lane departure much and cruise control seems to function approriately.

Ouch - windshields with electronics have increased the cost for replacement from something around $400 before electronics to $1500+ now? My wife's 2010 CR-V windshield was cracked beyond repair because of a rock thrown by a truck on the interstate but it has no electronics and the cost was paid by our insurance with a $50 deductible. If we had to pay the entire cost it would have been around $400, including the body shop's markup (they contracted out the replacement).

I have Metlife and called my agent asking this same question. He said if the windshield needs replacement, take it to the dealer for replacement and calibration at no cost to me. Call your agent and make sure your policy has glass coverage.

That’s BS to me! I just got my 202 rav4h windshield replaced last week and I had 0 deductible glass coverage from progressive! Final bill was around 1500 and I didn’t pay a dime! All covered! New to me that dealer offer such type of “special” windshield coverage....

I am in the UK and had a rock break the window a few weeks after I purchased it. The insurance covered the windscreen and the windshield camera calibration. The windshield replacement company were not used to 2019 RAV4s and didn’t realise that the windshield does not come with other parts that need to be replaced with the windshield and didn’t have the software to calibrate the camera, so I had the dealer calibrate it. The insurance paid..
FYI the parts that need to be replaced with the windshield are shown highlighted on the attached diagram. Also note the legend at the bottom left.

Good information above. I picked up a rock chip on my windshield over the weekend. I thought it was going to need to be repaired to prevent the damage from spreading. But Safelite looked at it today and said nothing needs to be done. The damage was minor and did not go all the way through the glass. Just the top layer. It's sort of in my field of view but less than a bug splatter so I guess I'll get used to it.

I have Nationwide and I never have paid a dime for my new windshields and alignments for the cameras. no deductible on glass.

I just replaced my 2021 RAV4...$1200 for a screen and it was a small stone chip on Saturday...full screen crack on Sunday morning. Car was 2 months old. Clearly the screens are weaker then old screens that could take 1 or 2 chips.
My chip was so small it needed to be viewed under a magnifying. glass.
Very disappointed in the RAV4 glass capacity.

I wonder if the RAV4 camera is the same as the CR-V? Our windshield on our 2020 CR-V got hit by a stone and a crack ensued instantly. $305 for windshield replacement and no calibration----all is working normally. The guy stated that as long as the windshield is installed properly he hasn't had a problem but also added "I would check with a Honda dealer to calibrate the camera".

I have Progressive and they dont have a "glass only" repair. I got a rock chip that was hidden under a wiper blade, so couldn't see it, and one day after work, I come out and there is a nice big crack going up and over on my windshield. I did the claim through Progressive, paid my $500 deductible and got a new windshield installed and calibrated by Safelite. My insurance rate isn't going up, so it is only $500 for me. That 5 year warranty doesn't seem like a good deal unless you plan on cracking your windshield more than 3 times in 5 years and if that policy covers multiple windshield replacements.

In the UK a new screen, with wiper heater, is £275 plus the parts that have to be replaced with it which are around £150, plus fitting. Then the calibration cost at around £60.
Insurance has a £75 excess (deductiblue)
Mine was replaced twice as the first had a deformation in front of the driver which caused the wipers to smear. Because of problems with the first installation, the installer refunded me the £75.
I saw the windscreen when it was removed the first time and it appeared that it fell to pieces getting it out, but I couldn’t believe how thin it was.
Toyota, like others, are reducing the weight every place they can. Thy don’t even like you having a full size spare because of the weight. So I guess I shouldn‘t be carrying the mother in law around either. :)
