The factory battery on my 2007 RAV4 V-6 died suddenly yesterday. Unfortunately this coincided with my feeling unwell. I managed to remove the battery and took to Walmart to replace. Bought back the replacement and, in my addled state, could not see how the terminal posts can be attached. I will be trying to attend to it later today, but wonder if anyone can provide guidance. It should be simple, but....

Facing the engine the positive battery post would be on the left with the battery in the tray. The positive post is larger as is the cable fastener that slips on to it. The negative post is smaller as is the cable fastener. Using the same wrenches you removed them with snug them securely and reattach the battery hold down. Does that help? I'm sure you'll see it once you feel better.

Thanks for the response. When I looked at it last night, I didn't see the cable fastener---could I have removed the wrong connection and left a post adapter attached to the old battery?

I hope not but you may have. You can purchase battery connector terminals from your local parts store. Please make sure to get a cap for the positive terminal since your car is grounded negatively.

This is my battery on a 2009. It has an added black wire and a red wire for an extra power connection, but I expect it to be otherwise similar to your battery hookup.

In connecting a battery, it is best to connect the positive first, and to connect the negative last.

That is entirely possible. You're SOL without it.

Would someone be kind enough to point to a step-by-step directions to removing the RAV4 battery? I have removed the connectors from the posts and removed the metal post that holds the plastic cross-bar down. Do I need to remove the engine cover to remove the cross-bar out of the way?

Thanks in advance.

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY
TERMINAL
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the
cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to
prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM POSITIVE BATTERY
TERMINAL
3. REMOVE BATTERY CLAMP
(a) Remove plastic cover that is above radiator
(b) Remove the bolt and loosen the nut

Step 1 - Loosen (do not remove) the outlined bolt on the NEGATIVE terminal. Wiggle the wire and the bracket until it comes out.
Step 2 - Remove the POSTIVE terminal cap (yes the red cap with the "+" on it). Underneath it should look exactly like the negative side.
Step 3 - Loosening the similar bolt in Step 1 but on the positive terminal side and wiggle the wire until the bracket comes off.
Step 4 - Remove the black plastic piece because underneath that plastic strip is a nut you need to loosen to get the battery out. For the push screws, use a pen or screwdriver and lightly push the middle pin in and the screw should pop out. Take the screws out and pull the pin all the way out (will help you re-insert later)
Step 5 - Remove the bolt that is holding the metal piece that is across the top of the battery. Watch out not to dislodge the metal hook at the back. If you do, just re-hook it when installing the metal pice back.
Step 6 - Remove the bolt on the OTHER end of that metal strip. Remember you removed the black plastic piece? This is why. This screw is under it.

Now just pick up the battery and swap in the new one and then reverse what you just did. When putting the screws back in to hold the black plastic piece, you want to insert the screw first and then put the pin back in. When you push in the pin, it should be flushed to the screw.

Sorry Carbon I jacked your picture and drew all over it. I used MS Paint because I was too lazy to start up my other computer and use Photoshop.

Advice

One other advice. Be aware of where you move your battery terminal connectors too. One of the first times I removed my battery, I moved the battery terminal connectors away from the battery itself. When I went to reinstall the battery, it took me 3 tries to find where the heck I moved my positive and negative battery terminal wiring too.

I know, I know, there's not many places to move it too. I moved my negative up under the driver's side wheel well area while my positive was pushed down besides the engine, covered by other wiring. It sucked and I know how to change a battery. I had to stop and keep coming back due to frustration. Murphy's Law was in full affect that day.

I have got another serious problem with my RAV4 2009. When I remove the battery and connect the terminals, my DVD hangs and no button on it works then. I take it to the mechanic and he is always charging me 20$ and does not shwoing me the trick how to fix it. He says never disconnect the battery when the engine is off.

Does some one know how to fix this problem.

I would never recommend disconnecting the battery with the engine running. May not cause a problem but you run the risk of voltage spikes.

To avoid loss of voltage you could connect a booster box (12V jump starter) to the battery cables and then remove the car battery.

Remove all CD/DVDs from the unit before possibly loosing power.

Find another mechanic or better yet go to an audio store who will show you for free. Will work best when you also buy something from the store.

If you don't have a booster battery, a "battery saver" may do the job. You would want to install that, and then close the doors. Allow time for the lights to time out before removing the battery to keep the 9-volt battery from trying to power lights. Here are a couple devices-- one for the power socket, and one for the OBD connector:
Schumacher OBD Memory Saver Cable - Google Search

(Kastar was bad idea, as Dr. Dyno noted, removed...)

Good ideas Carbon but neither will work, at least not as simply as advertised.

The Kastar requires the 12V outlets to be live with the key off. At least on my '06 neither are.

I like the Schumacher cable since the OBDII is live and it connects where you won't accidentally knock it loose when working with the battery cables. But it must be plugged into the 12V outlet on a booster battery box. Also it would be heavy enough to not die if one opened a door by mistake (causing a 2 amp draw that would wipe out a 9V battery).

Found this one on eBay:

Will buy it ASA my eBay Bucks come due.

Good instructions, however, my question is: on my 06 RAV4 there is a plastic cowling covering the engine area right up front which covers the bolt connecting the "hold down" bar for the battery. This cowling is held in place by plactic connectors which when you attempt to remove, they snap. I would think, removing this cowling should not be a major effort where by all the connectors will need to be replaced. Am I wrong? Am I missing something? Please enlighten me, thanks.
