When I dropped off my RAV for the 30K service, the dealership called me about an hour into the job to tell me the water pump was leaking and had to be replaced. They also told me they had to take the engine out to replace. It didn't take 13 hours, but it was there all day.

Hmmm seems they have some issues huh? Hopefully the new one will be better :?

On the bright side of things Toyota really stepped up for me and reimbursed me for my rental car for the 5 days, I got a good deal at $115 and the gave it back to me in full.

Bellevue Toyota In Nebraska did a great job going to bat for me with the rental, and I think they have modified their procedure to help out of towners 8) The did a great job overall, an Solid A from me. 8)

i just looked at the fluids in my engine compartment and notice the coolant level was way down......could this be water pump number 3?????????

i will have to get it looked at when they replace the v6 oil hose.

ok i am starting to get a little ticked!

I took my 2006 RAV in this morning for the 35,000 mile service, water pump was starting to leak so they are replacing it under warranty, free loaner car for the day and mine should be ready around 3:30 or so this afternoon. They are also replacing the oil hose with the new metal one while it is there :)

06 RAV I4 engine. Changed the water pump for leaking at 51K miles under powertrain warranty. Didn't pull engine. That's probably an issue on the V6. Coolant level was on the low side of good range. Never added coolant so no issue with using wrong coolant.

I had my water pump replaced in my 2006 Rav4 V6 for a leak back in 2007. It was maybe 6-7K km fresh :).

The service manager actually had never booked one before, so he snuck me in before my roadtrip and then to his horror, got told after the fact that, for my car, they did have to pull the engine. This mean it would be a 6 hour job, not a 1 hour job like he thought. They were really good about it though, and shuffled A LOT of staff around so that they could get my car done without having to rebook.

I just cross my fingers and hope it doesn't need to get replaced again like it sounds some others have.

LdyDee: Did they give you a receipt that showed what the cost would have been if not covered by warranty?

Well, depends on how tight it is. I remember having the timing belt on my '89 Civic SI hatchback changed at like 90k miles and the tech called me back and showed me the water pump was just starting to leak a drop or 2. He said while he was in there replacing the belt (at about $300) it would be just the cost of the pump and minimal labor (about $90) to fix. As packed as some of these engines are, it's not TOO surprising. It sure would be nice if something like that was an electric pump that could be mounted where it could easily be replaced.

No they didn't, sorry!

Took my 2006 with 73K miles on it in due to check engine, VCS and 4x4 lights being on (the O2 sensor failed), and was informed that the water pump was leaking. The dealership had it the entire day. Not sure if they had to remove the engine. Since it is not under warranty anymore, the repair (part and labor) was $465. That plus paying for the O2 sensor (which had to be ordered) made for an expensive day.

Does anyone have a diagram where the water pump is located on the V6 model?
On the V6, as you face the engine from the front, you can follow the hose from the radiator on *your* left to the area of water pump. I suspect it is the same on the I4.

Otherwise, you can locate the 2006 repair manual PDFs and look at that. There are links that identify where you can download that.
