3SFE engine

Hi... I have a 1998 Rav4 4.1 2Ltr petrol Freesport. I posed this question on the UK Toyota forum, have asked the UK importer and main dealers. No one seems to know the answer... i.e. is the 3SFE a non-interference engine. I asked this question when I purchased the vehicle and was told that the 3SFE engine was a non-interference engine... thus, even if the cam belt broke it would not trash the valve gear and pistons. After having an XR2 with a cam belt I always had the depressing thought that the cam belt would break and wreck the engine.

So... is their any Rav4 experts on here that would know if the 3SFE is a non-interference engine or not?

Thanks eodgator... that's two votes for the non-interference ^ As I understand it, it was Toyota that developed the non-interference valve/piston concept and implimentation... so it only makes sense for them to use it. My family and friends can't believe I am running round in a twenty year old vehicle... but IMO "If it ain't broke, don't..." Plus it is such fun to drive. You can keep all the digital garnish they load cars with these days...

Thanks LugNut, thats reasuring to know... I have just purchased a genuine Toyota cam belt and spring (not cheap). I will keep it in the car as a spare and for when the time comes. My current belt has done 57,000 klm... so I am getting close for a renewal. I used to work as a mechanic, but to old to go scabbling under cars these days... I prefer to pay a keen young local mechanic :)

I will post some pics of my old Freesport when I get chance. I often wonder if the Freesport model is chipped differenly to the standard model... it certainly drives like a frigging go-cart LOL
