Look for chewed up wiring under the hood and evidence of rodent infestation. They love to chew on the wire's insulation.

So it's pretty obvious that my problem is water/humidity getting somewhere, but where ?? I looked quickly this morning below the car and the engine and did not see anything suspicious (everything seems dry).

Any idea where to look ? Thanks
Do you have any aftermarket electronics installed? Remote starter, amps?

Code P0137 sensor

My 2013 Rav4 only has 17480 miles on it. The check engine light and the AWD light came on yesterday. I don't understand why with such little miles on it. will hve to take it in to th dealership to have them charge me money . I had my oil changed a few weeks ago ata dealership..they failed to put the oi cap back on...I must have driven the SUV about 300 miles when I realized the poblem.Could this have caused the sensor to go bad ?????

This thread was very useful. Thanks to all who posted.
I had skid light coming on followed by the BRAKE and ABS. They would always disappear after turning off the car and restarting. Codes indicated the stop light components. I replaced the stop switch initially since it was easy, and was not the source of the issue.
I noticed the warning lights would come on more often when I was hooked up to a trailer. That led me to aftermarket trailer brake light converter, which another user had mentioned was his/her problem. I pulled the fuse and have not seen the issue in the last few days. I plan on ordering up another converter, I have used curt in the past so will probably go with that unless someone has a recommendation.

I have my engine/VSC/4WD light on, I read code by Jumper, CEL:93/ P/S: 41 ; VSC:43 ; 4WD: 82. I tried to reset it by fuse removal or tap on Pedal method, did not cleared too. Please help me to find out what is the Code, how can I corelate it to the issue and how can I remove it .(I think my plugs are colecting too much deposit becaus eof Oil consumption issue), yesterday I changed all 4 Plugs (Iridium), today the engine light Flash and 2 other fix. it is Rav4 2006 4I. Thanks a lot.

You are going down the wrong path. With the CEL (MIL) light on the codes are coming from the Engine ECM not the Skid Control ECM where jumper method is used, altho it may show codes too.
Engine codes need to be read (and reset) with an OBDII reader, the type that many auto parts stores will use for you for free. So read and reset those codes and you'll likely be just fine.
Personally I have several inexpensive ($30) OBDII readers, one of which stays in the wife's RAV4, and one very expensive $300 Autel All-code reader which will read the Skid Control codes and much more.

Hello, hope you can help me with this. Last weekend, had dead battery and got a jump, from a friend. Then noticed that then CEL 4WD and Trac Off warning lights were, all on.
Was very afraid to even drive after consulting the manual. But then,,took in to dealer yesterday.
They said code indicates Crankshaft Sensor, and that it is very important I get it fixed. They have ordered part.

Notes on my invoice say:
Performed Health check and retrieved code for crank sensor malfunction. Inspected circuit from ECM and found okay. Monitored sensor and found normal operation.
First stage repair is to replace crankshaft sensor and recheck operation.

Since I left dealer all warning lights are off. This is a $750 repair. But I am wondering, if he checked the and found "normal operation" why do I have to replace it?

I called another mechanic because I had a bad feeling about this. He said unfortunately he cannot read the code unless the CEL is lit. He also said that if the problem has not yet, been fixed, he,would, expect the,CEL to come on again. Which it has not.

Any ideas???? Thank you so much for all the information that is here and for giving me a place, other than the dealership, to turn to.

Best wishes, Flora

I agree with the other mechanic. Some problems will not turn on the warning light unless they occur for a number of trips, other problems will turn on the light immediately. I believe the crank positioning sensor is a problem that will turn on the light immediately.

I would not install the new part unless the light comes on again. It may have been just a temporary malfunction due to a voltage spike when connecting the jumpers.

If the problem is very intermittent, it may not turn on the light, but your second mechanic should be able to read the "Pending Codes" in the computer.

Thanks Rick L, don't know if got my previous Thank you, since I am new to this site.
Anyway, new, developments: I have been cruising along with no problem, and no lights lit up, until yesterday morning.
I tried to start the car and instead of starting it makes a sound kind of like a dull rattlesnake. Not a click...more of a trill ...
Also like the sound I used to make in Spanish class to learn to roll my R's, fluttering tongue1 at back of mouth.
Can't really think of how to explain it.

This is the same sound it had made 9 days before. When it happened then, I got a jump, which started the car, and that is when the the problem of the CEL 4WDnd TRAC OFF lights coming on began.

The dealer said they checked my battery ...which they said was good...and also got the Crankshaft sensor readout . So they r3commended the replacement of crankshaft sensor as I said in first post. But I was dubious.

So now, with car not starting, have, taken battery to a Napa auto parts store where they said it was low.

I have a bit of leeway since I also have a 1996 Toyota Tacoma. Try to just use that as a farm vehicle since it is old,but it also keeps me from being stranded now. Do not want to do work that is unnecessary,
Do you think buying a new battery is a good place to start now? Is it possible that is the source of all the trouble?

That is the sound made by the starter when the battery doesn't have enough power to perform the job.

So that is twice now that your battery was too low to start the engine.

  1. A battery can be run down if an accessory is continuously operating like the dome lights, or you may have a defect in another accessory like the radio which suddenly started consuming power, even when it is turned off.
  2. A battery can also be run down under normal driving of the car, if the alternator is not recharging the battery.
  3. A battery can be run down just because it is old and can no longer hold a charge.

Fortunately most service centers, like Napa, can check the condition of the alternator and battery, normally at no cost. So it is very simple to eliminate cause #2 and # 3. Once these causes are eliminated you will need to check for excess current draw from the battery when your RAV is parked. This is a fairly simple procedure, but if you are not experienced in electronics, and you don't own a multi-meter, you will probably have to bring your RAV to a service station.

How did you guess that I might not own a multi-meter? Psychic? And not so experienced in electronic. Yup.

Thanks for the advice. Napa got "replace battery" reading, so I have replaced battery and will keep fingers crossed....which is what those of us Without multi-meters do! (IN addition, of course, to asking experts like you your opinion.)best wishes, Flora

I hope the new battery solves your problem. If you have a similar problem in the next week, you will know the cause was item #1 or #2. Let us know if the problem returns.
