Climate Control Problems - '08 Ltd

Hey, I was hoping someone could help me with a climate control issue on my 2008 Limited. It's been parked in my garage for ~3 months... since the last big snow here in North Carolina. I kept the battery fresh with a float charger, and there are no signs of rodent damage anywhere.

So, today I decide to drive the Rav4 to work and stretch it's legs a bit. Once I got on the road I tried to turn on the A/C since it was humid and warm. None of the climate control buttons would work and the LCD display with the clock would not show any temperature or fan settings. I pushed all the buttons repeatedly, but nothing would work. I did notice that heat was coming from the vents (this was the last setting I had selected back in the winter) which leads me to think the system is working, I just have no control over it now.

Once I got back home with it, I checked the IGN-1 and IGN-2 fuses on the drivers side panel. Both looked fine to me... I did not have my Ohm meter handy to check for continuity. I'll check them again once I find my meter.

Is there anything else I need to check? I guess I'll take it in to the dealership next week if I can't figure this out myself. I really need to drive the Rav for a bit because my daily driver needs to be off the road for some repairs.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Wow, this is a new one. Obviously, the HVAC system is not getting any power. Check all the fuses with the meter, even the ones that "look" good. I've been burned by that before. Also look at the 2 fuse boxes under the hood. Doesn't seem likely that a fuse would blow after being stored for 3 months. You may very well have a wire chewed in half by a critter.

I check fuses in place with a voltmeter not removed with an ohmmeter. If the circuit is powered you'll have 12V on each side. Even quicker is a 12V test light.

When checking powered fuses with a voltmeter, if you read 12 volts across the fuse, then it's blown.

Update: So, I finally took my RAV4 to the dealership to get the A/C checked. They had it for about an hour, then called me to authorize replacing the A/C Amplifier. They said it would be around $750 for the part and labor to install it. I told the service writer to go ahead with the repair. About 30 minutes later he calls back and tells me they don't have the part and that it would have to be ordered from Toyota Japan with no ETA. I told him to just hold off, that I would try to locate the part myself. So, I made a few phone calls to Conicelli Toyota in PA and had the part within a few days. Since then I've been debating on just installing the part myself... it looks like a simple enough part... just a small computer module with a wiring harness plug on one end.

So, this weekend I decided to give it a shot and start pulling out the dash pieces. I thought it was going to be in behind the glovebox... that's where I read it should be located. But, I've so far been unable to find it. Does anyone know where the A/C Amplifier is located on an '08 Limited Rav4? The part number is 88650-42220 if that helps. I've looked behind the glovebox, the radio, the climate control panel, and under steering wheel just to rule it out. I'm lost now... I don't know what else I need to remove... I'm so frustrated right now!

Any help with this would be extremely appreciated!

Thanks,
Patrick

Here's another diagram from ToyoDIY. The A/C amplifier is shown as part number 88650E:

*Problem Fixed*

Thanks to everyone who posted up help with this problem! I was finally able to find and replace the AC Amplifier on my RAV4 tonight, and now my AC is working again!

I really can't believe that my Toyota dealership was going to charge me $350 for labor on this job. Once located this was extremely simple to replace. A snap off trim panel beside the gas pedal, one 10mm bolt and two wiring harness plugs... turned the key and the AC controls lit up and the fans started blowing.

I took a picture to show the location. Hopefully someone else may find this useful.

Thanks again to everyone who posted help!

Thank YOU!

Thanks, Patrick...I'm about to replace my own A/C amplifier and couldn't find a single bit of information anywhere that told me where it was, exactly...until I found your post. Thanks very much for posting that pic!
