Cool custom spotter mirrors for new gen Rav4

Newer to Toyota, we recently traded in a Ranger for a Rav4. We didn't really need the truck part of the Ranger anymore and found the Rav4 to be a superior package to any of the similar current Ford models. Sometimes we tow a little Uhaul, nothing crazy. The Ranger actually towed very well for a 4cyl but it was a pretty harsh ride and the interior of the Rav4 is a huge step up.

Our Ranger had the spotter mirrors and those were really nice for both maneuvering around town and towing. Was looking for something to use on the Rav4 as the lights don't really help in those 2 aspects. The typical little stick-on ones suck pretty bad too.

Online I saw a number of mirrors for older Rav4s that had the spotters built-in similar to our Ranger. I saw nothing like that to fit the current model though. I would have even considered sacrificing the mirror indicator for mirrors if there were. This seems to be common on 4runners and Tacomas, which is mostly what I found, but nothing for the current Rav4.

After looking a bit deeper, I found a set of custom stick on spotters for the current Rav4. They are real glass and have an impressively clear view. The 3M adhesive is just thicker than the ring around the mirror. When you place it up in the corners, if you are careful not to press until it's full in position, it contours that ring pretty nice.
Looks pretty factory and functions well, and also keeps the monitor light in tact.

Took a while to find, but just what I was looking for (y) Found here: Toyota Extended View Mirrors - NXTGEN Automotive

I got a set of these from NxTGEN, but they don't fit. The top corner is too sharp of an angle, and when it fits over the molding surrounding the OEM glass, the ends are not on the molding, but rather on the glass.

I contacted NxTGEN and got the run around. They said I was not installing them right, but I was following their instructions to the letter. They said I could return them if I didn't like them, but of course I would have to pay a return fee and return postage. No thanks.

There is an OEM blind spot mirror for the 4th generation RAV4, but they do not fit the 5th generation. The 4th generation OEM does not have the BSM indicator. Wished there was an OEM blind spot mirror with BSM indicator for the 5th generation.

Based on your description it actually doesn’t sound like you are aligning them quite right.

The glass is rounded like the glass on our mirrors and the plastic is pointed just like the painted plastic on our mirror case. In my opinion it’s a very thoughtfully designed product because of that, as it legitimately looks OEM to me. They have made our driving experience much better, that's for sure.

Like the instructions showed, I slid it over on the sides first and then up. I did it with the adhesive cover on first and I was able to get it to quickly fit how their picture looks. When it was time to stick it on, I did the same motion but with two hands just off the glass. When it was in place, I stuck it on. Both sides were done in about 5 minutes. The adhesive sits below the black rim flat on the glass and the edges of the spotter mirrors just overhangs the rim of the Rav mirror. When the side is lined up I stuck that down, then I twisted the mirror upwards a little to align the top, counter clockwise. The instructions worked really well for me doing the sides then tops.

I did clean our Rav mirrors with alcohol but I didn't heat the mirror as they recommend. It's hotter than hell here, and they are stuck on there very well.

There is a solution that gives you a factory-like spotter mirror and the BSM, and you have it, so give it another try. You might need to go more over on the sides and then slightly rotate the top once the side is where you want it. No need to return, they really work well. Things are so costly these days. My wife's home decor business had to start doing a similar policy. Many of the clothing places she shops online have it now, too. Since she does it daily, we get it, but people get upset with her. Shipping and all of the fees to sell things add up quickly. A little accessory that costs her 8 bucks costs about twice that to process and ship before any profit. It's insanity, and don't even get started with the USPS...

The weather here has been kinda crazy, so please excuse our really FILTHY car. Here is a bit further out look for you vs my first picture. You can see how the spotter plastic matches the top plastic above it, the glass has the gradual curve like the mirror frame in the same corner. Take your time and it all lines up. For an after market stick on piece, pretty good in my book. The glass is extremely nice.

Good luck!

There is actually a better solution than those small "spotter mirrors". It is the "wide view" mirror put on some cars in Europe, part number 87961-42F00. I has about the same curvature as the passenger side, but fits the drivers side.

This thread talks about them: https://www.rav4world.com/threads/blind-spot-mirrors.332309/#replies

Since they are European mirrors, they may be impossible to find from US sources, and the sources in Europe will have expensive shipping to the US.

BTW, that part number is for the mirror with the BSM light and is heated.
