So I just got back from attempting this 5 minute task. The instructions in the app steps you through things to do in the Maps section. They first state that you don't need to have the car running; accessory mode is fine. Well, after having to transfer relatively long strings of data and then confirm the same data, the car eventually turns off to conserve battery. That would have sucked if it was right in the middle of updating. To make a long story short, I didn't need an update. Now at the bottom of the second app screen shot, the data I typed in is showing.

The information inputted from me is the following:
  • Dynamic Navigation Expiration Date: MM/DD/YYYY
  • Map Update ID: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX
  • Map Version: XX-XX-XX-[YYYY-MM-D]
So now, if I try and start the update, it goes straight to a screen that says "No New Updates" and has a paragraph explaining the expiration and that they will push a notification when it's time to update.

In some ways, I now feel used

Oh, I see now, they are preparing the system for when expirations come due.

I am still unclear what to do next at the end of your 3 year trial for dynamic navigation. My understanding is that the updates do not persist, and you will basically at that point have a >3 year out-of-date map. So, how will you be able to update the map at that point, without renewing the subscription? For previous cars, you just get a map SD card on eBay, stick it in, and you get a new map. For this car, it does not appear that is possible (no SD card). Is a subscription they only way to "update" the map at the end of the 3 years?

With the amount of authentication I had to go through yesterday to check for Nav updates via the App, it appears the only way to update once expired is to renew the service.

My plan is to try and update just before the trial runs out so I have the latest maps. At that point I will switch to an iPhone or Andriod Auto if Toyota provides an update for 2019s so I will use my phone for Nav anyway.

this came directly from Toyota. So yes it should be google map quality
What are the features of Dynamic Navigation?
Dynamic Map provides you with the most up-to-date map data on your Premium Audio system through real-time updates downloaded from the cloud.
Dynamic Routing uses information from the server when calculating a navigation route to provide the most accurate and up-to-date routes and estimated times of arrival (ETAs).
Dynamic POI allows you to search for points of interest (POIs) with casual search terms, as if you are using an internet search box. There are approximately 14 million POIs on board and 20 million off board.

Well I think it all depends on the point of view.

Dynamic Map provides you with the most up-to-date map data
I read that as "it provides you with the most up-to-date map data we, Toyota, currently have", not "Google level of most up-to-date". Meaning it will most likely be more recent data than someone without dynamic navigation, but I honestly don't expect too much out of it.

I would say you are reading a bit too much into that future (+ combined with vague marketing terms). But I would be more than pleased to be proven wrong!

I brought the car in to the service department This time a Toyota technology expert was there to assist the service technician to fix my Dynamic Navigation.
WHAT IS DYNAMIC NAVIGATION EXACTLY?
From the Toyota website and confirmed at a arbitration hearing:
What is Dynamic Navigation?
“Dynamic Navigation provides you with the most up-to-date map data, routes and points of interest (POIs) on your embedded system through real-time updates downloaded from the cloud.“

The system does not recognize new roads. If a business moves to a new location and gets a new phone number it will not recognize this. It will simply give you the old location, even if it moved nine months ago.
Today I was told Toyota will do nothing further for me regarding this issue because the Toyota expert said the system is working as it should.
Since the dynamic navigation does not work the way it should, based upon the description on the website, and explanation to the arbitration hearing.
THEN WHAT EXACTLY IS DYNAMIC NAVIGATION!!!!
From my personal experience I can tell you exactly what it is. It will say downloaded and optimized from the cloud.
However nothing is coming from the cloud. Whatever information is programmed into your hard drive no matter how old and out of date it is, is exactly what you were given.
You will not be given new roads or new businesses or new locations that a business has moved to. In summation Dynamic Navigation is a fancy word for absolutely nothing!!!

Toyota is lying about a fancy new state of the art Dynamic Navigation system which is supposed to be the first of its kind, and not being able to fill up my gas tank all the way because it stops at the three-quarter mark. And then being told they don’t know when they’re going to fix the gas tank They don’t even have an approximate date.
This will probably be the last and final Toyota I ever own. I have been a loyal customer and if this is how I am going to be treated then I will go elsewhere.

So everybody’s pretty much aware I’ve been put through a lot of crap trying to get this Dynamic Navigation system to work properly. Toyota called me just now and clarified some very important information I want to share with you:
Dynamic Navigation does update the latest roads and points of interest. However, the DYNAMIC NAVIGATION system only updates the latest map information and poi info TWICE A YEAR.
The woman from Toyota (Annie) told me she does not know the two months that it updates but she promises to get back to me when she figures this out. The website should be changed to reflect this because the way they talk about Dynamic Navigation it makes it sound like it is updated in real time and it truly is not.
When you enter a destination it says Downloaded and Optimized from the cloud. I asked her what that is doing and she told me she has no idea.
I believe it does absolutely nothing.
Over 20 phone calls to Toyota corporate, 12 days at the dealership and this information is finally shared from Toyota to me. if the communication from Toyota to the dealers to the customers was even just average all this bullshit could’ve been avoided. I truly hope that this saves other people a ton of aggravation.

Interesting. I spoke to a reliable sounding agent that worked at the Corp office for 20 years or so. He told me the Regular non dynamic navigation system was updated annually, usually about the end of October. That update can be installed by the dealer only.

So Dynamic nav is updated X2 per year and regular nav once per year. I guess dynamic is still better but nothing to brag about. Pls keep us informed on which month dynamic nav is updated. Also is it updated over the air or only at the dealer? Thanks for providing this info. Are you still working on a Toyota buyback?

I went through the arbitration procedure with Toyota The arbitration involves no lawyers. I lost my case for the buyback because it was determined that none of my complaints were safety related.
I can still hire a lawyer, but the cost of the lawyer made getting a buyback not practical. I also lose money on the vehicle itself. It ended up being too expensive for the lawyer. After serious consideration I don’t even know what vehicle I would replace this with.

Since I had this vehicle now for nine months and it still has not updated a restaurant that moved six months ago. I would really like to know what two months out of the year the dynamic navigation actually updates!!!
So far the best I can tell when you put in a route and it does say optimize from the cloud I think it takes into consideration traffic and road closures to give you a faster route.
Dynamic Navigation it’s supposed to download newer information twice a year. I haven’t seen any new information come out yet. It is also temporary and they call it a map overlay it disappears after your route finishes up. Exact words from Toyota was the cloud updates twice a year not in real time. Maybe not in a real year either!!!
I think it’s very scummy Toyota makes you think all this happens in real time.
Dynamic navigation is downloaded to your vehicle from the Toyota cloud through the DCM module in the car. They get this information to you through the Verizon cellular network. You don’t need an account the DCM module is connected to the Verizon network. No dealer Visit is involved in this process

I wonder if it's possible that Toyota updates the "cloud" twice a year and the car is dynamically pulling the data from this cloud. The information is old since it hadn't been updated. I would bet that's what Toyota is hanging their hat on for being dynamic since our vehicles do not have a DVD or SD card to replace or update.

Dynamic Navigation is a free subscription that you get for 3 years It is a cloud-based service that is supposed to download the latest roads ifrom the Toyota database over the Verizon cell network using the DCM module
When I used to enter an address it either said DOWLOADED from the cloud or OPTIMIZED from the cloud. My system no longer says this or shows a cloud next to routes. it says nothing . After I enter a destination. It just acts like regular navigation now Can anybody please verify this or please take a screenshot?
I went to the dealer yesterday and they did not understand what I was telling them They said the navigation system worked fine and I said yes it does but it is using the internal database not the cloud-based Dynamic Navigation.
I even called Toyota Customer Service and they cannot verify if it is working or not. Total frustration and A lack of how any of their products works. When I went to the dealer yesterday they did give me a dealer software update because my navigation screen was crashing and turning off this was supposed to prevent it but since this happened all these other problems started.

OK so i own a 2021 Toyota Tundra.....Same Issue. I found this forum and for me i figured out my issue. Hopefully this helps you. I opened the Toyota App Scrolled down to manage subscriptions. Clicked on Dynamic Navigation. I have a Free Trial Service but clicked cancel subscription. Then from the Vehicles Radio I deleted my phone from bluetooth. On My iPhone I went into bluetooth settings and clicked on "Forget device" for the radio. Paired My iphone with the truck again. Then went to the Toyota App and clicked on manage subscriptions. Then added Dynamic Navigation again to my subscriptions. Now cloud works again. I can't tell you why this fixed my issue but after last Radio firmware update that's when the cloud stopped working.

Well I tried to update the navigation using the Toyota app on my iPhone. Followed the directions and even time I tried to type in the expiration date of 5/1/2022 using my iPhone it would not take it. Showed on the app as 51/20/22 and wouldn't let me type inn the correct date I even tried to paste in the correct date and it was a no go. It wants two digits for the month and day. Tried to do a 0 before the month and day would not take that. I guess I will wait to next month when it goes in for service to have the dealer update it.

Edit: I even tried with my iPad that allows me to type / and it wont allow that ether.

You are absolutely correct.
Just because the business down the street opened 3 weeks ago, it will take time for the mapping software company's IT department to add the new info (after being notified) and go thru many de-bug testings, beta testings (batch info update, not just 1 address at a time) and final release.
After auto manufacturers (not just Toyota) received the latest map update, their own IT departments still need to do their own block point testings for software compatibility, crashing, etc. before releasing the update into production.

Unfortunately, some people lack the IT knowledge thinks "Dynamic Navigation" = imply real time info update.
