I've also seen a few Corolla guys with 2ZZGE's that were happy at how fast R9K responds and ships their ECU's and were also happy with the Results... so far they're getting great feedback as a tuner, even if they're in PR.

Any links to the 2ZZGE guys and their thoughts on this? :D

BTW folks, R9k says they tune the VVTi, Fuel Ignition, Rev Limiter, etc. I sent them a pic of my ECU's number and they think they can tune it. They said I'd have to send it in to be absolutely sure. I was out of the game. Guess I may .......May give this a shot.

Yeah guys, your advice is good. I had the same feeling while trying to open it and stopped. Since R9K knows how to do it, I rather have them do it. The part number should be sufficient though, you'd think.

Anyhow, I have just ordered a used ECU. Once it arrives, I'll install it and drive around to make sure everything is cool. It is the same part number and is from a 2010 RAV4 4X4 V6 as well so it should be cool. Once I drive it around and make sure it works fine, I will be sending my 'stock' ECU out to be checked to see if it can be reflashed AND to be reflashed if it is possible.

I am expecting no problems from this but you never know. If all goes well, I will be selling the ECU I ordered, for the price I purchased it for, to anyone that may be interested in this same modification but do not want any downtime.

So the ball on this has starting rolling. >:D

Putting this up as a reference in case I lose it from my phone, computer, etc.

Just thought of something too. After the reflash, it should be fairly easy to test before and after results. I can swap the ECUs out at the track on the same day (or separate days if necessary) to test the results to each other.

Excuse this quote as it was intended for another thread. I copy from that thread and pasted it here, forgetting to delete this part. Just in case you were wondering what I was talking about. It was in reference to opening up the stock ECU.

I'm interested to know if the used ECU you ordered will pair your vehicles security/immobilizer module?

I am about to order a 2nd ECU for my car as well for the purpose of having the original one remapped, but it would be a headache if it doesn't pair up with another cars security module/immobilizer unit.

You could possibly be on to something here.

The used ECU I ordered did come in. I tested it temporarily by unhooking the stock ECU and plugging it in, into this ECU. The RAV4 was trying to turn over but did not start up. Tried 3X. I did not bolt it to the frame and such so not sure if the brackets play as ground or something. Also....the part number is slightly different than my stock one.

My ECU Number is: 89661-42G20
The ECU that I ordered is: 89661-42G21

Thinking it was from a 2010 V6 4X4 Limited. I'll check when I can. It's been a long day. But yeah, be careful getting an ECU. The immobilizer module deal above could be a possibility.

Just keeping folks updated as to where I'm at on this. OrangeVirusTuning is not off the table either. Trying to get some more info off a Camry board member that has done this, along with an aftermarket magnaflow header and aftermarket cats. Stay tuned! >:D

Just called the salvage yard I ordered the ECU from. They are willing to swap the ECU for the one with the exact part number. They stated though that they contacted a local dealer about the two part numbers and the dealership said that the two ECUs are interchangeable. That being said, it looks like I'd need to have the ECU I have reflashed to work with my vehicle. Some more detail was provided but I will leave this with that.

That being said, I am reviewing two options because I am not pay to reflash a used ECU for use and also pay to have my stock ECU reflashed for performance.

I can....
1) Send my stock ECU to R9K to take a look at it and see if it is reflashable. And if so, have it reflashed and sent back or
2) Send my ECU to OrangeVirusTuning to have it reflashed.

OVTuning has already reflashed Camry's with the 2GR-FE engine, that is a Denso ECU (Dephi ECUs can not be reflashed yet). I am have contacted OVTuning to see where they are at with turnaround time.

The $$$ to do this with OVTuning is $355 vs $275 with R9k. Hrrmm.....decisions, decisions.

Will update! :confused::doh:

Update

I have decided to go with R9K. Will update as things progress with the checking if the ECU is flashable and so on. Will probably have more info on this mid-late next week.

In the meantime, I going to attempt a procedure to try to use reset/reprogram the transponder ECU to ECU connection. Linking two videos that pretty much says the same thing. I will attempt this a little later today after picking the Misses up.

WOW! I can't believe its that easy. I also bought a used ECU before shipping my stock one off. Could never get it to start the car and wound up hitching a ride to work for over a week.

I never knew! I didn't have a chance to do it today. Had some things to take care of with the Misses, a thunderstorm then nightfall. Gonna give it a try tomorrow.

I mentioned my issue with R9K tuning and he sent me the first video link.

I just finished doing this procedure with a paperclip. I had a timer set for 40 minutes instead of 30. I wanted to be absolutely sure I gave it enough time. When I went out to the Rav and opened the door, my alarm was sounding. I tried to turn it off with the red button on the key but it wasn't working. So this startled me. Anyways, I turned the key to the off position and then attempted to start it up. It started up on the first try. No check engine lights, no issues, no problems. I drove it around the block to see if I would notice anything unusual. Nothing!

So....I can drive without any issues as far as I can tell. If anything changes, I will be sure to let you folks know. Otherwise, once I get my stock ECU back and hopefully everything goes well, I will be selling this used ECU for someone else that may be interested in doing this modification (or something else) and not have any downtime.

So there you have it! :D

Reflashed to what?
.
He's changing things like ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, VVTi, etc. To try to achieve what you suggested that Lotus has done

If you change octane, then it would help to do some hard acceleration well before the drag to train the ECU. The major change that Lotus made with the same engine was the ECU. Maybe you could look to that for improvements.
.
From 'In search of 100mph trap speeds'

or

BTW, Lotus used a basically stock Toyota V6 engine with a modified ECM and got ~300 HP.
From 'Turbo or Supercharger kit'

Thanks for all your info.

I Just registered here to thank you Kevin aka Myxalplyx for all your effort putting here. Me as your main follower ( one year lurker lol ) Just wanted to thank you cause you've done a lot of great work to our ravs including; testing/spending/wasting ; money and time only to making her beast. I really believe everyone who Is making some stuff with their v6's they following you for sure, and you was my inspiration to buy a v6. The only one full limited v6 in south Poland for 15k$ ^^ Had D4d 2004 but we had crash accident and somehow we survived so I decided to buy another Rav.

Anyway... Waiting for ecu results.

I appreciate the kind words stachuaATX7.

The reflash is done. It is considered a stage 1 tune. This is a testing phase so it's not like I'm recommending this and the tuner is not necessarily ready to take orders or anything either. We are looking to find out what works, what doesn't, if anything. Fueling, VVTi and ignition has been modified. Rev limit has been raised slightly and speed limiter raised (Although I may not be entertaining testing this but it's there if I choose too). No first impressions as I have not received my ECU just yet.

Depending on how all this works out, I will be holding on to the ECU I'm driving around with now for a bit. I may........*sigh* have it reflashed to accompany a supercharger and possibly larger injectors. :wall This wasn't planned but it seems to be how things are working out. :crying

So...just waiting now to receive the ECU, install it and get some numbers at the track. I won't be comparing the numbers to my best 1/4 mile time in my sig but rather the temperature for that day and the average times I ran with the same temperature from some previous timeslips at the same track.
