Waiting for the dealer to open to drop the RAV off for the following error:

"Malfunction in the Electronic Control of the engine, throttle or automatic transmission has been detected. Contact your Toyota dealer to have your vehicle inspected"

Has anyone else experienced this? what was the outcome? how many down days?

So you do not have a OBDII scanner?

Times like these, one is of tremendous value. I've got the Bluedriver and the Carista.

If I encountered the scenario you are in, I would absolutely want to know what had malfunctioned and what the code was.

I have had less than happy experiences with Toyota Dealership Service Departments . . . . . given the dearth of knowledgeable people in the Dealership Service Departments (that I have experienced) . . . . I would be walking up to the Service Adviser with as much (if not more) knowledge than anyone there.

Okay, maybe "dearth" of knowledge isn't quite fair or reasonable.

Care, conscientious, fastidious, integrity, honesty, competent, now those are good descriptors for what is not in abundance.

If there is no other 'contributing' event that could account for your message? I would spit-ball a serious ECM failure. No Christmas Tree light show behavior from your MID panel?

My 2019 rav4 hybrid straight up died on me while on the freeway with this error. First it flashed an error about the hybrid system malfunction now its this one. Dropped it off for repair, they said it was fixed! I drive around the corner and it dies again! I seriously don't trust the rav4 or the service center repairing it anymore. Still waiting to hear back from them on next steps. Seriously considering arbitration.

For "normal" maintenance, Toyota dealers seem to be ok. For anything out of the ordinary, they often are incompetent... For solving intermittent problems, they (Toyota Dealer's) seem to lack in basic common sense..

If it isn't a loose connector, or sensor, then probably one of the computer modules is at fault. Dealers seem to not like replacing computer modules (especially when under warranty) because of the cost of the computer module..........

If people only knew how difficult and frustrating it is sometimes for service people to find an intermittent fault in something as complex as a modern automobile. Complete failures are relatively easy to diagnose and when fixed that's it but intermittent electrical/electronics faults can defy troubleshooting by even the most experienced mechanic and reappear at the most inopportune time. As long as the dealer is making an honest attempt to fix it and offers a loaner in the meantime then patience is a virtue.

For anything beyond normal maintenance, Toyota has a system where the dealer service department consults regional experts who are there to help on the really hard problems. A while back I had a unique problem, not even a google search of the 'net could find any mention of it. Left me stranded and unable to start several times. Lucky that twice I was just across the street from the dealership. I had a good service rep and we had discussions with the service manager and then the customer relations manager and they consulted up the chain. I have a feeling that the expert just happened to drop in. Get that started. Or ask for the car to be bought back and/or exchanged for the next one they get in. No yelling, just make it clear that everyone understands it is their problem. And that you are active on social media.

My issue ended up ( so far ) being tied to the low pressure fuel pump replacement that was a convenience recall. Whatever the case something went wrong with the float in the fuel tank and the rav thought it had more gas than it actually did. I guess I was running on fumes and the whole system went haywire as a result. Service gave me the green light and sent me on my way, but it died again right around the corner!!!! Anyway, new fuel pump , new low pressure fuel pump, and a new float , and a quarter tank of gas. Crossing my fingers now.

That is not a convenience recall as failure can leave you stranded. Not as bad as if it happened on an ICE car as after failure you can get to the side of the road...if you aren't a million miles from a cell tower etc.

We go last because ICE car failures can kill people with more probability. They actually self describe the groups of cars they asked to come in as "waves". They must have more parts now.

Got my letter Saturday. Calling tomorrow.

p.s. Maybe will be useful regularly check recall applicability using www.toyota.com/recall or www.safercar.gov

This thread appears to be a Post-n-Ghost by the Discussion Starter. Never returned to post a resolution or conclusion.

Having an OBDII scanner still seems to be the smart money with these mobile computer contraptions. Service "Writers" & "Advisers", sales drones, too many "Technicians" are just plain out of their depth with these vehicles.
