Hello everyone,

I've just bought a 2019 rav4 hybrid. I want the software of the infotainment updated so I can use Android auto.

Do you think it's possible ?

Problem I live in new Caledonia and the Toyota dealer can't/want not do it.

My rav4 had been built in Japan, and it's probably an import from Australia but not sure. (Left hand drive with head unit only in English)

Hope you can all help me !

Thanks

You cannot update the head unit to use Android Auto. But, what others have done, is swap out the head unit for a later one that already has Android Auto. You will need to do a bit of research to find what radio part numbers were intended for the intended country of use (Australia?). For the USA cars, this thread shows how to swap out the radio with a later one with Android Auto: (43) Cheap Audio Plus 8" Display Upgrade with Corolla Radio | Toyota RAV4 Forums

You sure it's not possible ?
I've seen multiple times that updating software would lead to have android auto, on rav4 from 2018 (or 2019) and after. Even on the official Toyota french website.

Certain countries did have a service campaign to add Android Auto to the 2019 Rav4. The UK comes to mind? There may have been others. It was never made available in North America though, which has left some rivers of tears very salty. I see you are in a different country though based on your forum flag.

Check your country's Toyota site to see if it is available where you are. Maybe you will be one of the lucky places where there is an update available through a dealership or software download that can be performed at home.

As an aside, the only North American vehicles to ever get a campaign for this was the 2018 Camry and Sienna. They shipped with no projection options but Toyota later added Apple CarPlay as a firmware update.

They were never kind enough to do the same for Android Auto here sadly, leaving many to either do a head unit swap from a different MY Toyota or use an aftermarket one.

Good luck!

I think you are right.
Unfortunately my local dealer don't care about updates... They are more an importator than a real Toyota branch. (We are a tiny island)

Do you have any idea where I can find a software updates website ?

Thank you

I suspect that the only safe way it will be possible for an update, if one is available, it from a Toyota dealer.

Another possible way is to find a auto repair show that uses a licensed copy of the diagnostic software Techstream, assuming that Toyota uses Techstream worldwide. Also, please be aware that some head unit updates to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto required hardware changes as well.

I would first find out if an Android update is available. One possible way to do this is to search nearby countries that MAY use the same head unit and see if there is an update. You would need the make and model number of your head unit. Even then, the software may be different as Toyota uses different head units and different software world wide.

Aside from the dealer updating your head unit, all other options are risky and may lock the head unit and make it unusable.

It was not free through the dealer in the countries that offered the upgrade. It was a paid service, so I'm sure your dealer would happily take your money if the upgrade was offered there.

Here is a link to the old UK page that discussed the firmware upgrade that added ACP and AA.

I think Australia also had a similar campaign.

Oh, it IS possible! Pricey as a local place can do it. Local place will do it for $$$$$

Our rant is at Toyota for dropping this from our car! LAWSUIT might be the only way to go. They sold the car with the system that they now dropped. Isn't that essentially WRONG? It is to me!

If the unit can be communicated with, it can be upgradable.
