Headlights stopped working. High beam OK. Fuses OK

Hello All,

I have a 2004 rav4 ACA21 (RHD).

I have a problem with my headlights, once you flip the switch to get the low beams, the lights do not turn on.

If you then try to push the switch forward thereafter, to get the high beams, they do not turn on as well.

If you pull the switch way backwards, the high beams turn on, but as is expected once you let go high beams turn off and low beams do not turn on at all.

Questions
1. Does the 2004 rav4 have a headlight relay?
2. I have checked the 30A MAIN fuse, which is still solid and checked both the 15A HP-RH and HP-LH respectively as well and these are also solid. What else could cause low beams not to turn on and the high beams not turn on once you flip the switch forward?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Yes I do. But those turn on once you flip the switch but the headlights do not

These are the headlights once you pull the switch backwards (flashing). High beams work.

Once you flip the switch as seen below, the dash lights up but headlights do not work

In summary;

1. Flip switch to turn on headlight, fog lights turn on, headlights do not
2. Dash lights up once you flip the switch
3. Push the switch forward, high beams do not work and high beam indicator does not light up on the dash
4. Pull the switch backward (flash), high beams work and high beam indicator does lights up on the dash

I believe the hi-beam indicator on the dash is powered by the hi-beam circuit, so how that is acting seems normal.

The fog-lights are powered through the tail-light circuit and the fog switch. Based on your observation I'd say these are correct and I'd bet you have tail-lights.

I'm not super familiar with 4.2, but in 4.4 there is a "Headlight" relay that provides power to the low beam circuit and then another identified as "Dimmer" that powers the hi-beams. The Dimmer relay is also what turns on when you pull back the wand for "Flash to pass", and that seems like it's working for you. That also proves your Hi beam fuses are OK.

So, you're left with the problem really in the low beam circuit and there's probably a connection between them that turns on the high beams only if the low beams are working (except for the flash mentioned earlier).

In 4.4, the low beam relay is named "H-LP" on the schematic, but I'd suspect simply "Headlight" on the fuse panel. That seems like the common point for your issue.

This is it. It is exactly my problem and begs the question does the 2004 model have a headlight relay?

As you can see below (I hope it is clear enough), in the fuse/relay box there is no H-LP relay.

Or could I be missing something?

Not sure about the '04, but my '18 has TWO engine bay fuse boxes, one on either side. The one for my headlights is actually on the passenger side of the car, while the main fuse box near the batter is on the drivers side. Any chance you have another fuse box?

One thing is for certain - headlights have been relay controlled for many, many years. You've got one. The question is - where is it lol.
Unforturnately in the engine base, there is only one fuse box. Since its a RHD, the fuse box is on the passenger side.

Thats the one you can see in the previous snippets.

And to answer the second question, no it does not have DRLs.

If there isn't a relay (that's hard to believe because the 4.3s have three) it almost has to be a defective switch.
If it does have a relay, as suspect it does as well, may you know where it is located?

Some information I forgot to mention, before it completely stopped working, there was a delay.

By this I mean after you flip the switch. It first took 5 seconds then later went to about 20 secs then to over a full minute before the headlights low beams came on until finally this stopped altogether to where I am at right now.

I would assume this as an indication of something failing over time.

It might be time to bite the bullet and spend $20 on a 2 day TIS subscription so you can download all the schematics and service manual information for your car... In addition to helping solve the current problem with the headlights, once you download it you have it available for any future issues. If you begin your subscription on a Friday, you get a few extra days because they measure the period in M-F business days, so Sat and Sun are "free".

I did this when I bought my '18... Partly out of curiosity and partly to help figure out how to wire my fog lights to run with high beams. Over the course of a weekend I downloaded virtually everything available for my model. I'm sure that $20 investment will come in handy one day ;-)

Good luck ! Crazy the relay isn't in an obvious spot... Perhaps it is the switch... But it's been a long time since manufacturers put that much current through a wand switch...
I suspect as much, there should be a relay somewhere, although I did attempt to follow the wiring from the wand switch. I couldn't see very clearly but the wiring does pass behind a fuse location on the drivers side.

Couldn't see any wire terminating to any relay but since I couldn't see clearly I am not too sure if the relay could be hidden somewhere behind there.
