mirror removal

Gino, I do not remember there being a cover. I just remember putting a nylon panel removal tool straight up under the mirror base between the button mount and the mirror and the thing popped out, up and off.

The toyota instructions show inserting a panel tool straight up under the bottom of the mirror base.

You might try a hair dryer around the mirror base if you think it is cold. Don't get it close, just enough to warm up the mirror some. It should be very easy to get the base to 70 degrees.

I do see a cover on mine. It looks just like the one in Johnny's first picture with one minor  exception - I can't get it to look like the second picture.

To see what I mean, see the first post in this thread and click "here" where he says
Photos and instructions Photos and instructions <a href="http://rav4world.com/mods/4.3/interior/install_autodimming_mirror.html" target="_blank" class="postlink">here
Actually, I think I managed to get a working link into the quote above (says he, bowing humbly), so just click there 8)

Anyway, in a true scientific spirit, I will see if I can successfully duplicate your method. (I just went out & tried - it didn't work)

Can you lend me a 12V hair drier? (Just kidding. It's starting to get warm enough in the afternoons. Besides, I have a 50ft extension cord. Give me enough rope...)

Wire cover;
Do you need the short or long? Thanks in advance.
I have read this thread a couple times. Does the cover come with the mirror or is there a part number from Toyota to get one? :bonk:

cover

If your talking about the Gentek type mirrors, every thing you need to install the mirror comes with it except:

If you want to cover the short cable run from the overhead panel to the rear of the morror you have to order a little cover with the Gentek mirror. About $9.00.

Thats the cover I was looking for. Thanks for the input!

These mirrors are less expensive on ebay. Many are Brand New 07's. Some even have AMBER display for Comp/Temp. to match our AMBER dash lighting. I bought a Brand NEW 2007 Gentex 45 Homelink /Compass for $239+$5 insured shipping. I dont need Rav4 club prices. Cant someone do better?

However, it sure would have been nice if they didnt have those square lights and use that to light the homelink buttons so I dont accidently push the wrong button right next to it at night when its pitch black around the mirror. I have to feel around and touch a few of the buttons until I know I got the end one and then push the right one.

Visit your local hardware store. Buy yourself a package of those tiny soft clear plastic nubs that are used in cabinets to cushion the door and keep it from banging inside the cabinet. They're maybe 1/4 or 3/8 inch in diameter. Stick it to the button you use for your garage door. Then just feel for the bump. I did this in our Prius and I'll do it after I install this mirror in our new RAV4. Works like a charm and is practically invisible.

At the time, these were the best prices I could find and they had to raise the prices later due to inflation/costs. Early buyers got better prices. I'm glad you got a better price, but what I wanted to show others with this thread is how to install these mirrors and try to get the best price.

Now, if you got a better price, why don't you post the link where you purchased the mirror to help others that might be looking for one also. Hopefully I'm not taking your OP wrong, but it seems you just come in and sort of poop on me... I guess its the nature of the web, not sure what you meant. Bottom line: Do you have a link?

Thanks for all your help Johnny. Didnt mean to poop on anyone. Just ticks me when they raised the price on us all and it was a decent deal from the beginning and I was going to go for the higher price but foundebay was cheaper yet. Not your fault. I just think they could have given us a better deal since they were so cheap to begin with and most of us missed out and now the deal is not so great for us.

No problem. I wasn't too happy about them raising the prices also... Thanks for the link

I purchased a Gentek mirror equipped with Homelink and compass from the same eBayer mentioned in the link supplied by e90. I paid $199.00 + shipping charge of about $12. I chose to save the extra $$ and passed on the amber display. I plan on installing it this weekend using the instructions provided on this site. The eBay seller Dave is accomodating and takes the time to verify you are buying the right mirror for your RAV 4.

Question on the wiring part, when connecting in to the wires for the sunroof, did you guys make a break in each wires insulation manually first, then snap on the tap clips? Or just put the clips on and sqeeze away? I started out trying to clip onto the acc power (small blue wire) and it didn't seem to be penetrating... don't want to clip one on all the way and then discover it's not contacting the wire, as I found out the hard way what a b!tch they are to unclip while playing with one before starting the install.

Homelink / compass / autodim mirror in and working (with my sunroof still functional no less! :p ). Thanks to all for the good info on this thread.
It's a great addition.

Make sure that when the ignition is off (key removed) that you are not looking at a green light on the mirror. If the mirror power light is still on when the ignition is off it means that you have the two 12V+ leads reversed. No biggy but it the auto dim/compass will drain your battery over time. You just need to switch the 12V+ wires to correct.

If it is installed correctly, the power light for the dimming features should go out when the ignition is turned off and the Homelink feature should still function.

HOME LINK POWER

Remember, if you hook up the homelink power such that it is on with the key off it is handy but if you leave the car outside unlocked by mistake, then someone can get into your house with the homelink button!

Think about it.

How to install an auto dimming mirror with Homelink.

1. Removed mirror. Needed to grasp the plastic cover and give it a slight twist to pop it off. Once that is out of the way, you'll press on the clip on the bottom where the mirror connects to the glass and slide it on up.

[...]

Questions? I'll try my best to answer them...

Hope this helps anyone else that wants this mod.
OK - I can not twist the mirror mount plastic cover off. I tried twisting it clockwise & counterclockwise. I tried putting a screwdriver in the slot and levering it left, right, or away from the window...No joy.

Note: I never used very much force, not wanting to break the window or the mount...

So - my obvious question: how do I get the cover off? I didn't find any clue on this thread...

Of course, I won't bother getting an automatic mirror until I know I can do this.

I realize this is an old thread, so if no one answers this, I'll try some plan B. :?

Thanks,
Gino
Well, on Wednesday (2/14/07), the weather got warm and the plastic maybe less brittle, so I bit the bullet.

I had come to the conclusion that the descriptions weren't quite working for me, so I thought about the thing - slowly, as you can tell.

The secret for me: hold a small screwdriver parallel to the window with the blade edge perpendicular to the window. Push it up into into the right side of the slot at the bottom of the cover, blade angled toward the right. Pull handle to the right, then away from the window. Success. The right edge of the cover popped away from the bracket and the window. Repeat symmetrically on the other side. No broken glass, no scratched paint. End of paranoia :D

With the cover off, it's very obvious how to get the mirror off the mount - the lever is roughly the size of a grave-digger's spade.

Now that I have seen the whole thing, it will be easy in the future: The cover has plastic lips pointing inwards (serving as clips) on the two vertical edges right where they touch the windshield. The metal mount has two matching grooves on the vertical edges right at the glass.

Hi! There everyone!, PLEASE HELP!

I sorry to have to borrowed this topic to ask this?

Has anyone of you out there order this Autodimming Mirror the Genk 5 and it has not been delivered? It has been two weeks since I ordered them?

They even replied that they have shipped the item out!

Actually I am located in Singapore! Tried calling them at 1 877 81 2249? Is this the right number? If there is any alternated telephone number please post it?

Cheers( I need it really )
