Navigation map issues

Does anyone have these issues on with the 2023 RAV4 Prime navigation map? (1) It sometimes takes up to 10 minutes for the map to appear. (2) Sometimes the map shows but the icon for the vehicle's location doesn't--although the map "knows" what the vehicle is doing because the map rotates as the car turns. (3) Sometimes the icon for the vehicle's location shows up but the map doesn't. (4) Sometimes there's a very low resolution map with angular features and no roads.
Turning the car off and on again can bring the map up, but can also cause the map go away.
My dealer can't tell me if this is a defect or not. They offer to reboot the DCM, but don't know if this will help.
I like the Toyota map and would probably pay for it when the trial subscription runs out -- but only if it works reliably.

The built in navigation gets it's data for display from the cloud; it is not in a memory stick as earlier versions. That connection is through the DCM to the AT&T cell phone network. If you are in a low cell phone signal area, or the AT&T network is slow, that will delay the presentation on the screen. There is really nothing that can be done about it at your end.

You might find the navigation app on your cell phone, I use Google Maps, more reliable. The Google Maps presentation, via Apple Car Play or Android Auto, on the radio screen is excellent.

I beg to differ on the above.
How does the navigation system work? (toyota.com)
It is like all GPS systems.

I would also recommend trying out the navigation apps available on your phone via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. I like the built in Toyota nav but it has a couple of drawbacks. The biggest being that after the one year trial expires it stops working unless you pay a monthly fee. And although it's decent enough, I've had better results with Waze and Google Maps from my phone.

In general and IMO, the 2023 infotainment system with the new buttonless screen sucks. It's full of bugs, has features that simply don't work (they literally don't do anything whether it's on or off, like the speed sensitive automatic volume), and is always doing weird stuff. Some people experience constant reboots every few seconds, mine has done other weird stuff, some of which could only be fixed by turning the entire car off and back on, etc...

Try to get used to using your phone nav apps.

Navigation map on my new RAV4 sometimes doesn‘t come on at all and sometimes it takes a few minutes. The vehicle is only a month old. Yesterday I had to pull over so I could switch over to Google Maps. They want me to pay a monthly fee for this? I was in Palo Alto not exactly in the desert. I prefer my Garmin dash mount GPS because Google Maps only works if there is cell signal. But that freaking huge screen blocks anything I put on the dash.

Yes I had all issues you have described. The head unit was replaced on Friday 2/3/24. It had to be approved by Toyota Technical after all diagnostics were performed. The issue was a hardware internal fault was most likely temperature related.
I’ve used it twice now with no issues. 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XSE with 9500 miles. Large screen and JBL Sound system.

After replacing navigation antenna and many software updates, all to no avail, my dealer replaced the head unit (10.5" screen) three weeks ago (early August 2024). That solved all the problems described in my July 17 2023 post that started this thread. Since the new head was installed, I've had two occasions when driving in remote areas with poor cell connections when the map went to low resolution--not surprising. One time it fixed itself when I got to a town; the other time I had to turn the car off and on to get the high-res map. Does anyone have experience with holding the volume button for 3 seconds? Just what does that do?

It reboots the MMI system. From the issues I have experienced and resolved by doing so, it appears to act the same as restarting the car, except you can do it on the fly anytime you like to clear any manner of issues.

It may take a little more than 3 seconds, just press until the screen goes dark. Give it a shot.

Very glad to hear you finally got the problem resolved. Shame they put you through the wringer.
