Have you experienced water pump failure?

Very nice to hear Toyota Canada stepped up. It pays sometime to keep that relationship going with your local dealership.

If you have the invoice handy, would you mind posting the replacement water pump part#? we're trying to determine if the failed water pump is indeed replaced by a new one from a different vendor/manufacturer.
Sure thing - the part number on my invoice is 16100-09441.

Hmmm, wonder if I should just replace the damn thing this summer if it makes it that long...at 61K miles now.

I probably wouldn't if I were you. Unless you're heading out on a big trip this summer and won't be near your trusted dealership or mechanic.

Here's why I say that: it's not a big job (just one day in the shop), and at least in my case, the sound was unmistakable and the failure was not catastrophic. When I heard the sound, I safely and happily drove home - no problem. I had it repaired at my earliest convenience and that was the end of that.

So if you combine the relatively easy repair, lots of advance notice of trouble coming and the ability to drive it home when it happens, I don't see a lot of incentive to lay out the cash for a pre-emptive replacement.

Others may have had different experiences, but looking back at what happened in my case, that's what I'd suggest.

Makes sense, thanks.

My water pump has failed. 2007 Base V6 w/ only 50,000 miles. It's in the dealership overnight as I type this. :(

My symptom: it sounded like a UFO hovering underneath my hood. It sounds cool, but not really since that sound was never there in the 6 years I've owned the vehicle.

My baby is starting to show her age. I still love her though.

A couple years ago I had my 2007 in the shop for a recall repair. They told me the water pump was leaking and needed to be replaced, estimate was around $1200.

I didn't do it, that was at least 50,000 miles ago, still no problems.

Mine has just started to fail on my 2006 V6 at 128500 km (80k miles).

Toyota dealership in Vancouver, BC quoted $840 after tax. This does not include a new serpentine. They said it would take 4-5 hours. A dealership in Portland, Oregon quoted me $400 plus another $88 to change belt. I guess I'll continue to shop around...

NOTE: I had voted "NO - I have not had a failure."Don't know if it is possible to change vote.

I changed your vote.

water pump failure

Bought a 2007 Rav4 Limited AWD with approx. 33400 miles in September 2013. Had Toyota dealer check it out before buying it. Got a clean bill of health. Water pump failed shortly after purchase, out of warranty. Local independent Toyota mechanic charged about $800 to replace it.

I've officially joined the water pump failure/leak club.

2008 Rav4 V6 with 46k miles. What a bummer. This thing has been such a POS for mechanical engine issues. Lost the alternator at about 30k miles, it has the VVTi start up rattle form time to time, and now this.

This poll is flawed. There should be 2 different responses for no failures with I4 and V6. While the % failure responses is higher for V6, we don't know if that reflects higher % of V6 owners.

Just got the word back from the dealer. As I suspected my water pump is shot. There is so much rattling noise from the bearings it sounds like a diesel. The dealer (Canada) wants $880 to fix it. I really hate the bogus "shop supplies" cost. ($70). I'm going to check some local garages for a better price..

Sounded like rattling marbles, someone in forum had GREAT advice how to troubleshoot (I forgot it !!! LOL) but lo and behold, water pump failure. 2007 V6 LTD, 110K miles. Replaced serpentine simultaneous, might as well!!!
