Have you experienced water pump failure?

Also, are the replacement pumps any more reliable than the defective ones?
That's exactly what I was thinking. I wonder if anyone knows the part number of the new replacement water pump? It may have been revised. My pump is showing part number 16100‑39455 at toyodiy.com. And it looks like it's been replaced by part number 16100-09441 at toyotapartszone.com

I have 16100-28401 on my paperwork and listed as $146.09 dont recall what the labor was but the warranty covered it.

That doesn't seem to be a valid Toyota part number!

Interesting....about the only thing these engines have in common is that damn pink coolant! That may be where the problem lies.
Digging through some of the Tundra water pump failure posts on different sites, some of the owners believe that the coolant itself may cause the problem.

But even though the engines are different and supposedly the pumps have different part numbers I have to wonder whether they use some of the same components.

I also researched pink SLLC connection with leaks and posted about it long time ago. This is why I purchased red LLC and plan to convert to it soon.

That's it! Looks like a couple of digits got transposed. The original pump was part number 16100‑28040, so hopefully the new one is an improved design.
Which coolant pump (part number) was originally installed on the 2011 RAV4 V6 engine? On three different parts suppliers' sites who claim to supply genuine Toyota parts when I enter part number 16100-28040 the sites list that as the pump for the Corolla, except for a Chinese supplier which lists that part number as being for the RAV4 but manufactured in China. When I enter part number 16100-28041 the response is that it is a Camry part which may not fit the RAV4 V6.

Time for pump #2

Our 2007 Rav4 v6 sport is in my Uncle's shop again. The first pump failed at 65k miles and now pump #2 is generating the same box of marble sound at 115k.

I hope pump #3 will last longer. Other than than the pump the Rav4 has been a great family car. We had a particularly tough winter in Maine this year (2012/2013) that brought a lot of snow. Even with worn all season tires the Rav4 is fantastic at driving around in the snow. My wife blasted out of the driveway every morning before I cleared the snow.

Two Failed Water Pumps since 2007

First WP failed with less than 12,000 miles (no cost to me), second pump just failed at 37, 361 miles. Both failures were due to bad bearings. I'm working with Toyota Customer Service to cover second repair since factory warranty ended. Bought RAV4 new (Base model with V6) and serviced by dealer until this year. Toyota should own up to RAV4 premature water pump failures as design flaw or quality problem or both.

2010 V6 Water pump replaced under warranty due to bearing failure at 28,000 miles.

New water pump part# 16100-09441

Really hoped this is the new & improved part and would lasts at least 100,000 miles likes all my previous cars before preventative replacement . . .

My waterpump went bad, the bearing. 07 Rav4 V6 sport with 88kmiles.

Question is, should I replace the idler pulley and belt as well?

Also I was thinking of buying AISIN Part #WPT803 model which I am told is a oem part from Japan. I only plan to keep the rav4 about another year or so, I should be fine buying that brand?

I previously answered this Poll with a "NO - I have not had a failure" well that changed today at ~76000 miles on a '07 Sport V6. Well it has been on going for a little while now, noticed some noise a couple of months ago but didn't think much of it because it was sporadic, (I actually thought it was the tensioner) no coolant was leaking and the Rav still ran great. Well took it in to a mechanic today for an oil change and I also mentioned the noise, sure enough the bearing in the water pump is shot, still no leakage though.

Well, I just joined the water pump bearing failure club - after 51 months and just a few hundred kilometres over 100,000 km (D'OH!)

I took the black beauty to my friendly neighborhood Toyota dealership after hearing the "marble in a tin can" sound coming from the engine bay and getting a nosefull of coolant smell when I raised the hood to see what was going on.

At any rate, my dealership took good care of me and the RAV - the pump was replaced in a day and the dealership got Toyota to cover the repair under warranty. They said that because I was under the 60-month time limit and not far over the mileage limit and could document the vehicle's entire service history since purchase, they would cover the repair cost. It was a very nice treat to not have to cough up for the repair right before Christmas.

At any rate, just for people's reference and edification, I signed a warranty claim for about $405, which covers about $130 in parts and a few hours of labour. There was no removal of the engine or any foolishness like that - 2-3 hours of labour sounds like just about enough to remove the old pump, install a new one and make sure that everything is buttoned up and nothing is leaking.

Very nice to hear Toyota Canada stepped up. It pays sometime to keep that relationship going with your local dealership.

If you have the invoice handy, would you mind posting the replacement water pump part#? we're trying to determine if the failed water pump is indeed replaced by a new one from a different vendor/manufacturer.
