Resetting the Average MPG Readout

Is it possible to reset the Average MPG Readout, so I can determine the recent average fuel use? I keep good records of fuel and mileage, but I’d like the flexibility of doing the calculation for a known period. As is, I have no idea of how long it goes into the past to do its calculations. Does anybody know about this? Thanks!

No. The brilliant Toyota engineers require that you turn over 999,999 miles to reset AMPG.

NOT! Hold the DISP button down for several seconds when it's in the AVG MPG display and it will reset.

Did you get an owner's manual? It has lots of cool information.

The owner manual is over 600 pages for my 2023 nx 350h and I stilll have not found a way to reset the total AMPG

24 to 24.5 MPG city.. Better than my old fwd ford..

It resets kinda like resetting a trip meter. I always try to remember to reset the average MPG (and a trip meter) when getting a fill-up.
After a few short trips, I see it stabilizing at 24 to 24.5 MPG and I know it's still working like it was last summer, when it was new to me.

I don't keep any records because seeing that stable average is enough to be informed.
And, I don't buy a lot of gas, because I don't drive much.
The kids use it almost more than me, and they buy their own gas.. :)

Cheers,
Rich

You have kids that buy their own gas??
Wanna swap?

The Kids are my daughter, son-in-law & 1 year old grandson. That little guy is way too cute to trade!
They have been living down in Miami and use the RAV4 while up here on holidays & birthdays or other occasions.

Only once did they forget to fill-er-up before flying back. I noticed we were on E while taking them to Boston airport.
All I had to say was "If we get stuck in Boston traffic, fuel might be a problem".. :) Never happened again..
When I got back home (12 miles) and got a fill-up, it wasn't as low as indicated.
Still had more than enough gas for another round trip to the airport!

This.

The AVG MPG is horribly inaccurate. I reset mine every fill-up, my Corolla might display 36 for a tank and calculated is 32-33, or it might display 32 but calculated is 34. Fuel quality, ethanol content, and temperature seem to make a big difference.

Just set up an account with Fuelly and text them your mileage, cost, and number of gallons on a fuel-up and monitor the graph for trends.

I've had a ScanGauge II for years. It was calibrated using mile markers and GPS. It took some effort, but it was very accurate with MPG.

When I got the RAV4 last summer, I just went by the odometer & gas receipts to find my average MPG.
Found the displayed average MPG was working pretty well. Good enough for me.No need to put the ScanGauge in the Rav4.
I'm doing a lot less miles (getting a low miles discount on insurance) now that I'm retired, my fuel use is low and much cheaper.
The extra cost comes from adding fuel preservative during winter fill-ups.
I just looked at last year's insurance info. The Rav4 was driven 1,880 miles between August 2016 & August 2017.
78 gallons? Maybe 10 or 12 trips to the gas station? ;)
We have the little Prius C2 for almost all of our trips around town.. It gets amazing MPG.. At least when I'm driving. :)

Cheers,
Rich

2018 Toyota RAV4 Limited AWD Toyota Certified Used is said to get 22 mpg City/ 28 mpg Highway.
TRUTH is 15.38 MPG. City driving only. No Highway as of yet.

Estimated 17,758 odometer when fueled by Advantage Toyota Dealership in Sept. or Oct. 2020.

Cost and how much fuel added to tank by dealership is unknown.

Fueled tank holds 15.9 gal. and dealer drove 94 miles in October 2020. 18,852 minus 17,758 is 94 miles.

Mon.10-26-2020 RAV4 delivered by transport to my residence odometer reads 17,852 miles.
Fuel Gauge indicates near Full Tank.

Thur.11-12-2020 18,120 odometer Fueled 10.456 gal. Cost $20.07 /$1.919 per gal.

Tue. 12-01-2020 18,187 odometer Fueled 10.773 gal. Cost $21 /$1.949 per gal.

Wed. 12-23-2020 18,339 odometer Fueled 10.532 gal. Cost $22 /$2.089 per gal.

Fri. 1-15-2021 18,513 odometer Fueled 11.220 gal. Cost $25.69 /$2.289 per gal.

Total miles driven since RAV4 was received on Oct. 26, 2020 to Jan. 15, 2021 is 661 miles.
Total amount of fuel added to tank is 42.98 gallons in 4 fuel ups. Cost $88.76.
661 miles divided by 42.98 gal. is 15.379 miles per gallon.
Toyota claims average City 22 MPG. Worse case scenario maybe 18 mpg as 15.38 mpg just terrible.

I had not done enough research as RAV4 is a terrible SUV and only buzz for its Safety Features.
I should had purchased a Honda CR-V.
Oh! 5 year depreciation on RAV4 is 44%. 5 Yrs on CR-V is 38%

Definitely get a CR-V. NEVER have to add oil. Just siphon the crankcase every couple of weeks. Recycle it into the gas tank (it's mostly unburnt fuel). You will absolutely get 200,000 to 300,000 miles on that 3 banger turbo.

My 2017 XEL shows these numbers: 28.5140862148 average and 35.957 best tank. These numbers are from an EXCEL SPREADSHEET over 25612 miles. Not a guess, not the middle display numbers, REAL NUMBERS.

15.38 indicates a real problem. Whether vehicle or operator caused, it's a problem. Sell, it trade it or junk it. Get that Honda. (No, I am not a Honda Hater.) My wife's 2000 Civic is in our driveway. BEST car we have ever owned. 70,000 miles. I have replaced the tires, thermostat and part of the exhaust system. Honda's quality control has declined in the last 20 years.

I can never fill up with a full tank due to this dumb computer gas meter thing. They say it is based on average on how much gas you consume and the computer calculates it for you or something. After using up the gas from the toyota dealer, i can no longer fill it up with 446km of gas. Last time I filled it up to 419km of gas, that was the highest i've seen so far.

Should i reset the gas meter before getting fuel?? this is frustrating.
