I've only gone through 174 of the postings to this thread, but this one is the only posting so far that has gotten close to my question. I don't care so much about the sound generator most of the time, but backing out of the driveway early in the morning I'd be thinking about whether I was disturbing any of my neighbors. If I put it into HV mode and then start backing up, does it make angel sounds? (I would test it on my own, but I'm still waiting on delivery of my R4P).
That I am not sure of.

I’d like to find a way to relocate the switch to the inside at some point and use an OEM like button in one of the blanks on the left hand side.

The backup "HOWL" is due to the U.S. Government worried about someone backing over a child or blind person. But, they didn't state what the sound had to be. Hence, commercial vehicles get the 105db beepers and private cars get whatever some engineer in a back office can think of that will be as annoying as possible. Personally, they missed a great opportunity. Imagine if when you put your car in reverse the car would scream like a terrified woman. Or how about a message, like, "Look out A-Hole, I'm backing up!" or "Out of my way!" Endless possibilities... you could even sell the speaker time to advertisers through an uplink. Lawyers would probably use the system, "If this car hits you, Call Cheesy Legal at 888-555-1111

That is a great idea. We could have sounds like a "Stuka Dive Bomber", or voice like "Warning Will Robinson", maybe "You will be assimilated", or a bugle call of "Charge" The list would be endless.

I’m ready to kill this alien that’s living under my hood.

Got all the parts today for a clean install. This will be a easy plug and unplug of the speaker.

Qty:1 Housing Connector M: Part number: 90980-11168

Qty:2 Terminal Repair W W: Part Number: 82998-12450

Qty:1 10W 8ohm resistor

This is good info. Part numbers for lesser items can be hard to find.

Would you be able to locate the part numbers for the respective black connector, and corresponding wires, as shown in the attached photo?

My plan is to put a two way switch between the white and black connectors. This way I won't have to cut into the pink wire for the switch.

Thanks.... Peter in CT

The thread still has room to grow. Someone could work out the components for a limiter to make the reverse sound quieter without disabling the forward sound entirely.

Not toyota parts but see this post.

I have found that a 100 ohm 1/4 watt (small) resistor works fine when "plugged" directly into the socket and does not even get warm with backup engaged for a prolonged period time. The speaker connection is most likely monitored for "open circuit", not for a specific load on the circuit as has been previously suggested, 8 ohm 10 watt or whatever. In general, high frequency speakers take very little power to operate, much less than a watt to create a very high volume of sound.
I tested up to 1000 ohm and it was still fine (no error) so you are definitely right. Settled on a 470 ohm to be sure I'm not on the edge of failure.

I actually feel safer now as I'm no longer in a hurry to back up in order to turn off the awful noise, nor to shift out of R early and loose the camera.

So did ya’all buy this car without knowing about the sound, did know about it and finally decided you couldn’t tolerate it or what? Did you not test drive or what the hell is the deal here?

^^^ When you test drive the car on a dealer lot, it is a noisy environment, and you do not notice it as much. Or, you are concentrating on a dozen other features/attributes of the car, and tune it out.

When you pull it on/out of your garage for the first time, you think: yikes, what is that racket! After that, it starts to annoy you. Finally, you do something about it and bypass the noise to achieve blissful quietness.

My audio installer had a few plastic boxes from previous projects. I can see if he recalls where it got it from.
Chiming in to say I would also like to know where your audio guy got this box. It looks perfect for this application.

I've tried searching for a similar box but maybe I'm just not describing it correctly in the Google machine.

I know I knew about it just from this forum and the two reddit communities. However, test driving a new RAV4 Hybrid or Prime with this PWS was not an option as none existed on any dealer lot in my area. I relied on recordings to determine if I could handle it or not.

After I received my Prime, it took about a month of laughs, strange looks, and pedestrians in parking lots stopping right behind my car trying to figure out what that sound is for me to decide it has to go. It is causing more frustration than helping its intended purpose.

Also, my experience is that the sales rep will bring the car out already running and you never have to back it up. The forward sound is reasonable, it's the reverse sound which is ridiculous. In any case, there were no hybrids to test drive anywhere when I bought mine.

Interesting. I was just so curious because that was one of the first things I discovered when doing my research and was well aware of it before I even showed up to pick mine up. I don’t mind it, the only thoughts of changing it are for comedic purposes.
Thing is, in backing out of parking spaces etc. it doesn’t seem like anyone even notices the sound. It’s definitely not common enough around here for people to be used to it so I guess they’re just oblivious.

I was unaware of the noise maker, didn’t find it in research, and didn’t hear it during the test drive. Besides the fact that it’s unnecessary and annoying, everyone who heard it would comment on how weird and dumb it was which contributed to taking appropriate action.

I think awareness of and attitudes toward it will change as afflicted vehicles become more common.
