The seats aren’t gonna be BMW level seats no matter what. If seat comfort is THAT PARAMOUNT to you, then GO BUY A LUXURY CAR. The RAV4 isn’t for you.

Why the people who don’t like the seats (for whatever personal reason) need others to feel the same... that’s so irritating.

After just 3 spinal surgeries and a non functional left leg i can't complain about the seats. @BravoYaMarka : Your statement that there is no lumbar support is BS. Ik can adjust the lumbar support in my XSE up to the rock hard level if i want to.
I'm driving longer distances without problems. So i guess you bought the wrong RAV4...

I had spinal surgery about 14 years ago and I still have ongoing back problems. For me, the seat in my Rav4 compares favorably to my $3,000 Ekornes Stressless recliner which is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

I'm one of those who have been completely happy with my RAV4 seats. I have a 2019 Limited with the Softex seats. My "car seat experience" goes quite a ways back, but it has been close to a couple of decades that "seat comfort" has been the most important thing in a car, to me. The "modern" part of that goes back to a 2006 Camry XLE, with its leather seats. It wasn't something I noticed on the test drive, but after about six months of driving that car, I realized that there was one thing about the seats that really bothered me -- they had a seam going from front to back, and it kind of "pushed up" at the very back, essentially pushing against my tailbone. I actually took that to an upholstery shop several times, as we tried to reshape that seat cushion, remove that seam, and so on. I was about to just get a seat cushion from the SE, but eventually I just wound up getting a 2008 Camry SE V6, again with the leather seats.

The SE seats were perfect for me -- they proved that I preferred "more bolstering," and I certainly do prefer to "sit down into the seat," rather than feeling like I'm sitting "on top of the seat," as many other seats make me feel. When the 2015 Corolla generation came out, I took one for a test drive, and found that the seat was extremely similar to the Camry SE seat -- again, I went for the Corolla S Premium, with Softex seats. The bolstering and all of the other seat shapes were almost identical to the Camry SE seat, so I traded for a Corolla S Premium, and enjoyed about 10 miles per gallon better gas mileage.

I went for the 2019 RAV4 Limited because, again, it had Softex seats, along with the Technology Package with the bird's-eye-view camera system, and a few other things. The seat is a bit less heavily bolstered, but otherwise, the shapes and sizes are still very similar to the Camry SE seat and the Corolla S Premium seats that I liked so much. So, this is my history of "seats that I like."

That said, I'm a smaller guy. Five-foot-five -- at age 63, I'm actually losing a bit of height over the years. I'm about 175 pounds -- a bit overweight for my height, but not outrageously so. It seems that the "uncomfortable seats" messages here have come from guys who have been quite a bit larger than I am, but I certainly don't know if that's always the case.

All I can say is that "I try before I buy." Especially after that Camry XLE -- I take test drives as long as I can get away with. I have also been going to the local "Auto Show" every year for at least a couple of decades, and the main thing I do is sit in as many cars that I can -- especially all of the cars that I have at least a minimal interest in. And I can certainly say that an insane percentage of cars have horrible seats. It's generally true that "the more you pay, the more comfortable the seats are," but it's like the Corolla -- you can get very good seats in normally-priced cars, if you do a lot of test driving. But in the end, we all come in different shapes and sizes, and seats that "fit me perfectly" may not fit someone else, especially if they're a lot larger than I am. And so on. Test drive as many cars in the segment you're looking for. Take longer test drives in the cars you're truly interested in. I have a friend who says "he doesn't care about stuff like that," and just buys the cheapest stripped-down used car he can find, and his current car (Hyundai Elantra, probably around five years old now) has TERRIBLE seats. He even complains about them, himself. Test drive, test drive, test drive, test drive.

It's already been discussed that cloth seats in base trims are not comfortable, fake leather ones are great. I drove in both and saw big difference in comfort.

Yeah I test drove a cloth seat one for several hours and they weren’t impressive, but noticed a huge improvement when I went to softex. Unfortunately they need to entice you to higher grades somehow...

Vented seats for long road trips, amazing. I found with some lengthy drives I'd alternate heated and cooled cycles to avoid muscle strain.

I could never buy a vehicle for long road trips without vented seats going forward. No back sweat, no bottom discomfort etc :)

I have tried both seats (cloth and softex) and they are definitely more comfortable than the concrete leather seats on my old 2012 Limited. I find the softex to be really comfortable in my 2021 Limited.

PAINFUL SEATS!!!! I'm looking for a solution. In fact, any comment here claiming the RAV4 has comfortable seats is unbelievable. Here's the thing. If you are fine in most chairs, you have less credibility. I have had two back surgeries so unlike when I was in my 20's and everything was comfortable because I had no sense, I now will feel it if a seat is designed poorly like this. Put simply it HAS ZERO LUMBAR SUPPORT... ZERO and for the life of me I cannot understand why. I've not seen anything like it elsewhere. I am not saying the lumbar support isn't adjustable like some are saying here. I'm saying there is no arch. The car is great but there is no lumbar back support. And it's very painful sitting in the RAV4 and arch your back in the air. It wasn't like this in my Accord, nor in my Camry, not in my Infinity G20 or the Lexus. I wanted a RAV4 so bad so I pulled the trigger because of all else it has but their stripped down version brings a new definition to stripped down being that it's 2021. For the life of me I don't know what the designers were thinking with 1) No Lumbar and 2) the head rest that literally jets forward when your head wants the opposite and to tilt back. So your back hangs over arching to work out the pain and the head is pushed out so you can't even lay back. The two in combination of 1) no lumbar and no proper headrest may have me selling my dream car within weeks of buying it. Note to Toyota - I don't know what you are thinking. I tried to make this as objective and data driven as possible Vs "my experience"
Do you have the powered seats with lumbar support or just that the lumbar support isn’t enough? The headrest angle is a regulation now as I understand it. My only complaint, generally, are that vehicles don’t let you manspread anymore... and for me, that’s annoying.

Thing is it is your experience, people are built differently.

I don't really understand the headrest thing, I had to look at it to confirm that it leans forward as my head never contacts the headrest, never realized this until now.

I had an 11 Ford Fusion that I had no intention of getting rid of until I realized it killed my back, couldn't sit in it more than an hour without suffering back spasms. The RAV4 I have no issues with.

I use to have an 01 RAV4, those seats were uncomfortable after about 3 hrs.

My 06 Tacoma seats are a bit worn but are ok for a 6+ he drive too.

I usually expect to be uncomfortable, I am 6'5", airplanes kill my back.

My other car is a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and what I have found is that having a passenger seat that has the same full adjustments as the driver's seat helps a lot for long road trips. Even with the adjustments, I find that the driver's seat is tolerable for 2 hours, anything after that and it's not comfortable, the next car I buy will have both front seats fully adjustable and the bottom cushion be longer. I am only 5'10" and around 235 so not a little guy. They are fine for short trips for me and the passenger seat has your head so high in the cabin, not sure why you can't get a power seat for 40 grand but I knew that going in.

Really love everything about the car but the seats, I am currently debating getting out of it as I routinely take 5 hour one way road trips.

Just noticed in the F-150s we have at work the headrests also "jet forward". Never noticed because the highest part of my body that still contacts the seat is my shoulder blades.
That's because the headrest is misnamed. You're not suppose to rest your head on it generally. It's there to prevent your head from whipping back in a crash.

Had mild whiplash as a child while riding in the backseat of 1960's VW Beetle that got rear ended. There were no head restraints back in those olden days.

In the video, they mention that the uncomfortableness is being reported by the 6'6" and 6'4" drivers.

I'm a heavier 6'4" dude in an XSE, and I've driven it for a 4-hr trip so far. No complaints on the seat, although I find myself wanting to duck my head because my hair brushes against the lowered ceiling (due to the moon roof). I was surprised that the powered seat doesn't lower more than it can.
Another 6'4" owner (with 30 extra pounds thanks to COVID) reporting in- leg room is adequate, driver's seat is comfortable for 3hr+ drives without a stop. Toyota's rear seats have a well earned reputation for poor thigh support. My 5'4" daughter frequently has to roll up her jacket and stick it under her legs on longer trips.

6’2” dude reporting in, I think the seats are plenty comfortable, especially in the XLE the driver seat having electronic adjustments. Only discomfort I had on a 970km road trip recently was my red wing boots and the cruise control resting foot angle almost caused my foot to fall asleep lol.

Seats are same design. Only difference is cloth vs vinyl (fake leather, what toyota calls softex)

Plenty of discussion on that here. Bottom cushion is too short and hard.

Passenger seat too high and not adjustable
Just bought Limited Hybrid with sunroof and have asked Toyota if they can lower seat by 3/4 ins. No reply , seemed stretched or understaffed.
