I think I had this done because I got a letter in the mail a while back telling me to take the car into the dealer right way for an ECU reflash. Can someone explain what a harsh shift is?

I dont know if my car is having the same problem as the ECM issue. My 2001 rav4 4wd can't shift to higher gear if I cold start it in the winter. I think after it shifted to 2nd or third gear, it would just stuck at that gear. I can only go up to 40mph, even if I push the car near 4000rpm. In the summer, I have no problem with it at all. I don't drive it that much, most of the time its a short distance to my job place, only have 40k miles on it. Recently I just had a complete flush of the transmission fluid done at my local dealer.

So when did the symptoms appear relative to the flush?

First flush? How many miles on the odometer?

when cold also my box stays in 2nd or 3rd gear but changes to higher when the engine is warming up. this happens after about 2 miles of driving. i think it's to get the engine / cat quicker to working temp. may be your sensor isn't working correctly and the ecu things that the engine is still cold?

tranny

I had this happen 2 me about a year back. The car would shudder and not shift into the next gear or shift like it was being rammed from behind. I called Toyo and they said probably needs a new tranny (140000km on my car). I didnt even know about the ECU problem !! I ended up going to a tranny shop and it was a $5000 repair. Toyo woulda done it for $7000. Welcome to the RAV 4 world. This is pooor engineering in my opinion !!

Also, this year, my car has 183,000km, and there is major sludging in my engine. This caused an oil pump to my engine to fail, which lead to the cam gear on my VVTi enging not receiving lubrication. This ultimately led to the gear not functioning properly. Everytime the VVTi (variable valve timing) comes on, it causes the chain to stretch and knock against the valve cover. After opening up the engine and showing me what exactly is happening, I agreed and $2500 later, it's like a new car !! Im very disappointed in the amount of $ we all have to put into these vehicles post warranty (especially since it is not due to neglect of servicing).

Similar on my '04, if its cold. Will shift to higher gears as soon as coolant temp exceeds 55°C. Stated to be normal behaviour.

Went to dealer today and got it fixed. First they would only reprogram the ECU for me, along with the factory Cat recall stuff. After I got the car back and I drove for a mile, noticed the same problem and so I drove right back in to the dealer and tell them, nothing has changed. I told them it's the ECU, they checked, agreed and got me a new ECU, now it runs normal.......Thank god my problem surface before 80,000 miles (I got 76000 on), so they do it for free. Cold weather is more like a trigger to the problem, for these couple days temp rise and the car would still shift oddly, and it was really freaky to drive before the fix.......(going uphill and lost power for a sec or 2, in middle of intersection and lost power for a sec or 2.....)
Mine was a 02 Rav4 L 4w btw :)

Does anyone have this issue and when they bought it to the dealer, they didnt want to do it cause regular maintaince service was not done there? Basically, you will do all of your oil changes and stuff like that either yourself or at your own guy and then you take this to the dealer, they are making excuses saying that you didnt do this here and that here and you cant get this done under warranty because of that? Any advise would be great, THANKS!!

I have 2001 Rav4 - 188000 KM on it. Started having that same issue everyone describes here. Doesn't go into gear, jerks, hesitates, can slip in and you can hear the clutch pop. Sporadic and then finally the engine light came on.

We took it to a transmission specialist. He examined the tranny and hooked it up to the computer. He said he had done a lot of Rav4s, but never knew this exact issue. His diagnostics was telling him they had to do the tranny. Mininum $1600 to open it up and replace a few parts and if there was more damage, more like $3000. I asked about the ECM and he said it was fine, but after they were done the tranny they may have to replace it. If they didn't replace it and goes later, he's responsible.

Sounded like hogwash. I pulled me ECM out and sent it to the mechanic in NJ who has the Ebay repair for $400. Got it back, put it in and then began driving around. Rough idle and acceleration at first, but then the computer worked itself out. So far a week and no issues. No engine light.

If it weren't for this site, I'd have no choice but to sink all the money into a tranny or sell the RAV4... Thanks all.

This ECM transmission failure connection is not new, in fact is expected. According to my local Tucson dealer they have repaired many such cases at the owners expense. The failure malfunction of the ECM results in damage to the transmission which the ECM does not detect. Toyota has been awae of this problem and according to Toyota they have senior management investigating the problem. Please call 1-800-331-4331 option 5 to report your concern with this on going problem. Since this transmission failure also poses a safety issue should your tramsmission fail on a highway, call the Highway Traffic and Safety at 1-888-327-4236 as they alreaddy have the beginnings of a data base that could initiate an official investgation of this problem resulting in a manditory recall with financial reimbursement. PASS IT ON !
