I try to do it every oil change, it's something like $10-$15 from Rockauto so I'll order 3-4 at a time to lessen up the shipping cost per unit... Live in Colorado and work takes me to some pretty dusty places.

 

My 2015 Rav 4 calls for the engine air filter to be changed every 30,000 miles along with the cabin air filter. It states that both filters should be checked every 5,000 miles. My suggestion would be check them every5,000 miles and if they look dirty or getting dirty, change them when needed.

 

I have a 2017 XLE with 30,000 kms. Was in at dealer on Friday for regular servicing. They showed me the air filter and it was somewhat dirty but they said it could wait till next service. I had it changed. First time for replacement.

Depending on your road conditions, anywhere between 30,000kms to 50,000kms would be fine. Usually only need to change them every couple years. I rotate mine half way through as usually one side will pack-up with debri over the other. If you live on dirt roads and you see the filter getting dirty earlier then I would change more frequently. I checked mine on the weekend at a little over 28000kms and it still looked fine. Very little debri in the filter.

 

For normal city living, every 2 years should be fine.
