Carbon, live in Canada and you will notice everything is more costly. But in the meantime I have a new 65-67 mm wrench that is a bit big, so to make it fit I covered the internal of the wider 67mm with good quality white Scotch electrical tape to bring the diameter to 64 mm.

The damn wrench now works as it should, snug fit around the aluminum canister and with the tape as a cushion it holds the canister well. Where there is a way there is a will!.

Hello everyone,
Haven't posted for awhile since the move settling in and all. It's cold here in NC (miss AZ). Anyways so I've followed this great guide for changing my oil. I was about to change out my rear diff and transfer case but only got to the rear diff at the dealer in MI while visiting family. Yesterday I made an appointment for the transfer case to get changed along with the oil and tire rotation. The service rep came back stating that my 2012 rav4 sport v6 doesn't use a transfer case. I pointed out pictures from here and the section in the online manual from Toyota's site, but they would leave and come back saying their tech said it doesn't use fluid and it uses the same fluid as the automatic transmission. Am I misunderstanding? I thought the front diff shared that fluid. So I'm skeptical about going back there. Anyone have any recommended dealers for NC Jacksonville area?

There is no transfer case. I'm curious what you are looking at that shows one. Front is a transaxle using ATF. The rear is a conventional differential. There is a electromechanical clutch in front of the differential to handle the difference in axle speeds.

I too do early fluid changes on new cars replacing everything I can with synthetics. I do trans and diffs between 10k and 15k miles. First engine oil change is at 2 to 2.5k. Looking at the metal in these fluids will make you a believer.

Wow, so I guess the entire chapter in the service manual devoted to the GF1A Transfer Case is a fairy tale? It says to use .48 US qts of SAE 80W-90 oil grade GL-5 in the transfer case.

Ya. Showed them this page out of the owners manual online after they said it shared fluid with the transmission. Just felt like any facts I showed them they would talk their way out of it "the tech said _____". It's the only dealership in this small town. Next over is Jacksonville.

WOW! I would avoid that dealership like the plague, even if I had to drive 100 miles out of my way. They probably don't see many 4wd RAV's in Florida.

I'm in North Carolina :p sorry for not updating my location. Hopefully I'll be in fl in a couple years. Ya. I'm probably going to do maintenance myself till I find a dealer in Jacksonville, nc.

Thanks very much for posting. This is my first car with a cartridge filter so I was a bit confused.

Which torque wrench did you use?

Hey I've been trying to find a micrometer torque wrench that is cheap and reliable. Which torque wrench did you use to tighten the drain plug and the oil filter cap in the instruction?

Can you use a regular screw on filter instead of the cartridge? I went to my local auto parts store here in Canada and the guy gave me the screw on filter. I have a 2006 Rav 4 Sport.

Did you use a 3/8 adapter to 1/2 inch socket?

For the filter cap tool, I used a 1/2" torque wrench along with a 15/16" socket. For the drain plug, I used a 3/8" torque wrench.
Did you buy a 3/8" 15/16 socket? I meant if I have a 3/8" torque wrench but a 1/2" 15/16 socket. If I use a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter, will that affect the torque some how?

I am thinking about buying an adapter set because I have all these sockets and wrenches accumulated over the years and they don't match.

What do you mean a screw on filter?

Not on a V-6. Go look at the picture on the first post in this thread for the V-6 filter.
