I purchased a new 2007 Toyota RAV4, v6, Sport. At 75K mileage, I too had to replace the water pump. Hope sometime someone determines if it should have been recalled before now.

Willie, did you ever have the cooling system serviced? If my water pump is going to leak/fail, I hope it happens before my extended warranty runs out at 75K!

I've got a "platinum", no-deductible extended warranty on my '07, good until April, '14 or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. As I still don't even have 45,000 miles on the car, I might not even hit 60,000 miles before the warranty runs out. If the water pump is going to fail, therefore, I hope it's sooner rather than later.

Water Pump

I have a 2008 Rav 4 with the V6. The water pump is failing. I notice the coolant mist under the hood. We only have 24600 miles on the car. I am hoping the dealer will cover this. I scheduled an appointment on Friday morning. I see a lot of water pump problems with this car. I am curious as to why toyota has not recalled the part. Is there somewhere I can go to log the problem? Thanks

I'm going to have to keep a close eye on my water pump...my 08 is only at 53K but it sounds like it is still quite likely to go anytime...

Just curious, what does the dealer charge to do this repair if you're paying out of pocket? And has Toyota redesigned th e pumps being used as replacements at this point?
In California it costs $400. My water pump failed at 26,000 miles. I called Toyota at 1 800 331-4331 and complained but they didn't do anything. If your water pump fails, please notify Toyota because if enough owners complain, they may issue a voluntary recall. Have you VIN handy.

folks see this thread for more details...

Be advised. although the traditional sign of a leaking water pump might be expected, it seems as though with the WP for the rav4 06-09 dont show this, instead it builds up inside the pulley(s), may get flinged onto the inside of the hood insulating material, leaves white crust on the inside of the serpentine belt and edge of the pulley. At this point (as in my case) the issue of the leaking WP has been around for sometime ~4-18 months. So everyone please check for debris on the inside of the hood, underneath the belt and pulley.

Will do. I just checked the oil (still at the full mark after 3K miles), no residue noted, but I will keep an eye on it going forward.

While the water pump may be a chronic failure point in our RAVs, it is not a safety related issue so it is not subject to being recalled.

There are two types of recall - safety related often because of NHTSA pressure, and recalls which are done by car makers voluntarily to correct problems which have occurred frequently and which generally are not related directly to safety.

i see eerie similarities between Toyota RAV4 and Suzuki Samurai: both trucks were hot in their early years. the Suzuki Samurai ( also known as Chevrolet or Geo Tracker) gradually disappeared from the radar. Toyota RAV4 is following in the footsteps of the Suzuki Samurai with a variety of problems such as the water pump failure, and more recently with the 2013 redisign of the once popular RAV4, which looks like a carbon copy of the Honda CRV.

Rav 4 V6 Water Pump

We have a 2008 Rav 4 V6 with 24600 miles. We bought the car on Nov 7th of 2008. When I called the dealer they told me it would be covered under the warranty. When I got to the dealer they said it was 6 weeks out of warranty. To make a long story short, i convinced the dealer to fix the friggin part. It took the better part of the day, but they fixed it and toyota covered it. The service manager says he sees a lot of water pump issues with this car and that toyota Motor corporation allows 10 billing hours to the dealer to fix it. While I was there, they fixed the lower control arm and the window master switch recall. I think toyota just slapped the RAV 4's together to get them sold as quick as possible and did not put that much care in these cars. I have an FJ cruiser also and that SUV is a rock. At least the dealer covered the part and labor but we are on our own from now on.

That's not right! The water pump is covered by the 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty. You're still covered until November 7, 2013! BTW, I bought my Limited V6 on November 20, 2008, and I just made 27,000 miles!

About the RAV4 V6 water pump problem, it would be appropriate for Toyota to do what Honda has done, in relation to another situation. She just received a notice from Honda about her 2010 CR-V, in which Honda stated that because there is a problem with some A/C compressor clutches they are extending her warranty on that item to 7 years or100,000 miles.

Man i wish i took pictures for my leaking WP (i4 awd sport 50k miles). I had no signs of leaking on the garage floor, but there were tiny crystals on the black felt panel inside the hood directly above the belts, pulleys. Also, when the pump was removed inside the pulleys was filled with crystals (white but mainly pink colored) and the serpentine belt had white residue all over but of course on the ribbed side so only visible when removed or gently lifted off the alternator pulley. My message you may not find coolant on the floor, but a big sign is white crystals on the black felt panel... If i were you i would take it to dealer and have them inspect it for a leak, primarily the weep hole test (search for tsb on water pump leak diagnosis to become familiar with the design and the test for a leak). If you havent already, take it in for a recall and ask for WP to be inspected,; usually during the recalls the dealer will do a complimentary inspection and wash as a courtesy (ask about the type of wash, you dont want to introduce swirls from a brush or hand towel drying).

Had two water pumps fail with bad bearings on my 2007 Rav4 with V6 engine. First time just under 12000 miles and covered by standard factory warranty cost nothing. This week failed again at 37,361 miles and cost nearly 800 bucks. Beware owners with V6 engine. I'm awaiting response from Toyota as this seems excessive and my Toyota service manager agrees.

Aside from what I've read from the few on these threads, I never personally met a single 2006-12 V6 owner (and I always talk up RAV owners cuz they're generally female ) that has ever had a water pump issue. My RAV 6 is at 60K miles and sweet as sunshine. Now someone quick, pass a plank of White Plain pine so I can knock on it. LOL.

And if y'all think you got problems?

My daughters 2008 base with V6 went at 86,000 miles and the temp gauge never showed it was overheating. I didn't have extended warranty on it. I ended up replacing the engine because I didn't know how much damage it caused because it was over heating. The only indication we had was there was a sloshing sound when stopped at a light. I now have the extended warranty on my 2011 Limited V6. My wife's 2007 base with 4 cylinder has 16,000 miles and one more year of warranty.

While researching Ravs on Consumer Report's site the ratings showed problems with engine cooling on 2006, 2007, & 2008. Ravs from 2009 through 2012 didn't show problems with engine cooling in the ratings.
Yeah, on one level that V6 pump reliability problem is logical since the years showing the most problems likely have more miles on them. If I recall correctly Toyota's later model year pump has a different part number. On this forum I'd asked if later years actually have a revised/different pump and if so, is it actually different from the old one - no answers so far. Tried searching on the Toyota site re parts - only info is a dealer locater. :wall

2,600 miles since WP replacement, so far so good. I'm skeptical it will last 100,000+ miles but sincerely hoped it would proves me wrong . . .

I don't think that pink life-time coolant is contributing to the longevity of the water pump. Changing the coolant every 60,000 miles or 3 years couldn't hurts?

Let's hope that your replacement pump lasts as long as you have the vehicle! What do you think is in the pink coolant which could be causing a problem with the pump? Based upon your experience with your 2010 V6 it appears that Toyota may not have solved the pump problem which has been prominent with earlier V6s.
